Question:

Is my Betta fish dying?

I've had a Betta fish for about a year and a half now, and today I discovered it lying still on the bottom of it's vase. Her gills and eyes are still moving, so I'm positive she's still alive. However her once vibrant purple skin is now a pale lavender. I tapped and shook the vase to see if it was just asleep, but all it did was flutter it's fins. It doesn't look healthy and i haven't overfed it and it's water is clean. I can't think of any possible reason as to why it would look so unhealthy. Any ideas?

  1. Ours at work does that a lot. Half the time it looks dead, but I was told that just how they act.

  2. i'm not sure why? is the water temperature rising since it is hot?

i would take it to your local pet store.. or a vet :D haha just kidding.

  3. because its in a vase and not a tank that is heated and filtered.   No, they are not supposed to act that way, actually, bettas are very active and curious fish.   make sure the vase that u call its home is heated to around 76-80 degrees, betas are tropical fish, they need warmth.  if you dont want to get a new tank, then atleast get the betta a larger vase or container, and get the beta a heater. a filter would be nice. live plants would make it much happier. once this is done, betas can live up to about six yrs. you'll be amazed at how much color your betta will gain.

  4. FLUSH IT DOWN THE TOILET

  5. She may have a fungus or a disease. Look at her scales closely. Is there any super thick slime or cottony white substance on them? If not, she could simply be dying of old age. I'm sorry, I hope she gets better!

  6. sometimes the water *looks* clean but it really isnt. You cant see nitrites or nitrates etc.

get a sample of your water and take it to your nearest fish store, they will usually test it for free or for a small fee.

  7. Hi There. Your betta may have a disease called Crashing Disease. I just went through the same thing with my black moore ( whom is now all gold ). This disease is caused by an illness or illnesses that was not seen and it just kind of hangs around in your fish causing a worse disease such as Crashing. It's not your fault that this has happened. You can't see or notice the illness they had before this stage. You just need regular fish medication. I would suggest a medication called All-In-One. It treats more then one illness. Just in case there may be more diseases present in the fish tank that you don't know about. It worked awesome for my fish tanks. It even cured my Turquoise Snakeskin  Discus ( from the cichlid family, exotic. This disease is mainly found in the cichlid species. Also you should get some sea salt for the tank. It enhances the medication helping it to work faster. there is also medicated food. This would help so much because then the fish is getting medication both outside and in the fish. Again a more rapid time on the recovery of your sick betta. Bett'a live approximately 1 to 3 years. Good luck with your sick betta. I hope it gets better VERY soon.

  8. Well it could be because its living in a vase, maybe you should get it a small tank or something. My betta fish use to do that too but after a couple of weeks being unactive they eventually died.

  9. I'm afraid he is not living in proper conditions.

He needs a heater, as Betta's are tropical fish and require constant temperatures between 21-26 degrees Celcius. Anything temperature lower, or constantly fluctuation due to room temperature, can cause lethargy and depression. They lose their colour when not kept in the right water temperatures.

They are also better in a 2.5-5 gallon tank minimum. They live in thousands of gallons of water in the wild and even though they can live in a bowl, vase, etc. it shortens their life drastically!

    A gentle filter also helps.

They can have life spans for 5 years, they can live in a vase, but will definitely not thrive.
