Question:

Is my GPS covered under our renters insurance?

Yesterday, my husband and I went to TGI Fridays for dinner..it was still light out. I have a portable Garmin Nuvi (about $600) in my car. I ALWAYS take it off my dash and put it under my seat. Well always, except for yesterday. My 3 year old was having a tantrum about being in the car seat, and in all the commotion I forgot to take it down. BIG MISTAKE! In the light of day, with people coming and going, these b******s broke my passenger side window and stole my GPS right off the dash! I am heartbroken. Our car insurance won't cover it, but we do have Travelers renter's insurance, which we've had for 2+ years. I don't know what our deductible is, but do any of you know if this is covered, and how much of the cost do they cover? Thanks!

  1. Since it wasn't located in your house, unfortunately I can't see the renters' insurance covering. However, it WAS located in your car. If you have comprehensive coverage, it covers vandalism. My window was broken and they paid everything to have it fixed (not sure what your deductible is so you may have some out-of-pocket expense). I would think it would cover your personal belongings as well. I'd definitely do what was mentioned before and fight the insurance company on this one. You may not get the entirety of it back, but at least fight to get some money! Meanwhile, you may think about shopping around for better car insurance if they're not willing to pay for vandalism!

  2. The first 2 answers are wrong!

Yes, it is covered under your renter's insurance under theft.   Most insurance companies require that you file a police report.  Your personal property is covered anywhere in the world but it is subject to a deductible.  Some policies cover full replacement value, which would be $600 minus your deductible.  Some policies only cover the actual cash value, so if it is old, they will take some money off for depriciation.  It is NOT covered under auto insurance because it is not permanently attached to the vehicle.

  3. did you have a police report? if so it will help the claim

  4. Statistically the GPS unit is now the most common item stolen from motor vehicles.

"Poeticjustyce23" is correct. Your renters insurance shouild cover any items in your car. There may or may not be a deductable, and there may be an adjustment to the covered amount for depreciation, but it should be covered.

May I suggest locking it in the glove box, or trunk rather than putting it under the seat. If they're going to steal it, make them work a litter harder to get it.

  5. Your auto has to cover it.  If it is something that can only be used in the car it is covered under your auto insurance.  Definately fight your insurance company on this one.  Your homeowners excludes it.
