Question:

Is my German Shepherd puppy growing at the right rate.?

We just got a GSD puppy. We were told it was 6 weeks old. I'm not really sure of the age. I read a growth chart on-line, and it said that at one month he should be about nine pounds. Ours only weighs about four pounds. Is this normal?

  1. Why do you have a puppy at 6 weeks old? Bring the puppy back to the litter mates for another 2-3 weeks! That puppy is underweight.

  2. I have a German Shepard too, they're good dogs! That depends, does the puppy look thin? If so, have you been feeding it regularly? You might want to feed him more often if that's the case. He could also be the runt of the litter if you think about it. My German Shepard is turning 7 next month and is about 97 pounds. When your dog grows up he should be around 90 and 100. But if he's the runt, then he should be around 80 and 90 pounds at full grown.

  3. I would advise a trip to the vet, an exam can tell if the pup is as old as you were told, whether it is too underweight. Take in a stool sample for a worm check. And let the vet know where you got him, when you got him, how long you have had him, and what you are feeding him, and what he was fed (if you know). The vet will also go over the vaccines that you may or may not need, and what type of heart worm and flea prevention you should use in a small pup. I wish you the best of luck. In the right hand a GSD can make the best of pets!  :-) p.s. six weeks old is a bit young for weening a pup and sending it to a home. Another good reason for a vet check

  4. Well you got him much too early, but what have you been feeding him?

I would bet he's younger than 6 weeks and just been weaned.

Buy some mother's formula at a pet store and mix it with his puppy food. He can't just eat dry food. Make it very runny.

  5. First of all,the pup should have stayed with the mom utnil it was 8 week. And secondly,if it is 6 weeks and 4 lbs.,then it is way undersized. My GSD  weighed 10 lbs. at approximately 7 weeks ( she was a stray),and she's a female! Are you sure it's a purebred? Also, has it been wormed and vaccinated? What did the breeder feed it? You need to take it to the vet asap, and see if it checks out OK.It may just be very small for it's age,but there could be something wrong as well.

    Can you post a picture?

  6. he may not be 6weeks old?maybe post a picture of the puppy?

    4lbs is kinda small.
