Question:

Is my Guinea Pig ok!?!?

Ok... Well my Guinea Pig has lived a happy and healthy life... Up to today. Last night I checked her out, and she was limping. Whenever you try to pick her up she squeeks and screams. Now she is only 3 and she does not have an infection called "Bumble bee". Her nails are long, could that be the problem!? Anyways... I really want to help her, without getting her to a vet (which costs a lot of money).

the problem: When she walks or runs she seems to limp on her front left leg. Her nails are long. She does not have an infection. She's been lying down on her side but she stands up when you walk near her. She was in a metal cage, so I moved her to a grassy cage and a flat surface cage. Can I help her without sending her to a vet?! I keep very good care of my pets, and it kills me that she is in pain!

Thank you!

  1. yes

  2. It is a possibility that your guinea pig could have a leg injury. They do have very fragile legs and any kind of jump can damage a leg. As far as toenails go, they can cause pain if they are long enough and curl around the other toes. As far as veterinarians go, not any vet will do. A veterinarian thats not experienced with guinea pigs can be a disaster. Guinea pigs can't have most antibiotics or it can killl them. Make sure you are going to a qualified, experienced guinea pig vet.

  3. heyy...i had a guinea pig...you defiantly should trim her nails that could be making her limp because they get sensitive and when she walks it puts weight on them and that can be painful. Hopefully that helps. I hope she gets better I loved my guinea pig so much he was like my baby so I know how you feel.

  4. You are supposed to regularly clip their nails. I'd start with that.

  5. that never happend to my guinea pig...try rimming her nails and if that dont work the best thing would be to take her to a vet...good luck i hope she gets better

  6. The nails need to be cut. if they get to long it can cause problems with their legs and walking and of course will be painful.

Here is how to cut their nails.

1   Know that guinea pigs have four toes on their front feet and three toes on their back feet.

Step2   Know that guinea pigs' toenails grow continuously.

Step3  Remember that not all guinea pigs are perfect. Some have an extra toe, which should be examined by a veterinarian.

    Clip Your Guinea Pig's Nails

Step1  Prepare to clip your guinea pig's nails by placing your guinea pig on your lap with its tummy facing out.

Step2  Hold your guinea pig lightly around the stomach.

Step3  Use your nail clippers to remove the tip of the nail on the front and back feet, before it reaches the "quick" or the pink section of the nail.

Step4  Clip ¼ of an inch of the nails or less to ensure your guinea pig's safety.
