  1. Perhaps she is new to you and is afraid of you. That could be the reason for the biting. Once she gets used to you, the biting would stop.

Was your hammy ever in the presence of a male hamster in the past fortnight? Then there is a high probability that she might be pregnant.

The gestation period for dwarf hamsters is 18-21 days from the mating day.

It is very difficult to tell if a hamster is pregnant. The reason being her size won't increase until the last 4 days before delivery. Some clues include when she may be building a bigger nest, hoarding a lot of food in the nest, will eat and drink water more than usual and sleep a lot more if she is pregnant. In the last 4 days before delivery, she will look big in the belly and teats would be prominent.

Whether she is pregnant or not, if you have even the slightest suspicion, then treat her as though she is pregnant for the next 25 days. Make sure you give her lots of clean food and water and supplement her protein intake by giving her bits of hard boiled egg whites, bits of unsalted cheese and little quantities of skimmed milk. Also supplement her regular food with pieces of fresh vegetables like carrots. Throw away any stale food after a day. Try to put the cage in an area where she has the least disturbance from noises and activities.

Read up on the internet on how to handle pregnant hamsters and hamster babies so that if she delivers a litter, you would be confident about how to handle the situation.

  2. It is possible she could be pregnant dose she look fatter than normal also if she is pregnant and u start hearing like screaches from the cage then u know she has had babys but dont put ur hands in the cage at all its important that you leave your hamsters cage dirty for about 3-4 weeks to be on the safe side sounds horrible i know but if u put ur hands in their with the babys its very likely the mother will eat her litter she will keep picking them up by their neck and they will screech but dont worry she isnt hurting them she is just taking them back to their bed i hope this helps you if she dose have babies just remembre not to put ur hands in the cage at all and dont clean it for a few weeks stacey x

  3. what you're describing is normal hamster behavior.  Hamsters don't like being picked up in reality, mainly because they see your hand as a predator, which is why your hamster would both get wary and bite if you picked her up.  Continue their normal diet, and if she seems bigger and heavier in later weeks, then there is a chance that she's pregnant.  if so, just look up "how to care for a pregnant hamster" on google.

  5. Anxiety and/or biting is not enough on it's own to assume pregnancy.

Has she been into contact with a male?

Have you had her for more than 2-3 weeks? If so, she is not pregnant.

You need to give her chance to calm down. Perhaps you are expecting too much trust from her. Feed her treats every now and again. Wear gloves when you stroke her, so she realises you are not going to hurt her even after she bites you; it won't hurt you. Be very gentle with her. Make sure you wash your hands before handling her, and afterwards.

    Hope this helps =p.
