Is my House AC sys not cycling right? Thermostat?or is it something else?

Some days my up-stairs Ac system stops cooling efficiently, and after a short while hot air come out.(set at 74 but it starts to rise as high as 88) i have found out that if i turn the ac off for a minute and then back on it starts to work just fine and immediately cools down. I have cleaned the condenser and the fan/ blower and I know the blower is running at proper Amperage, also the circuit board was recently changed due to a failed relay. It will be very nice of you to guide me if you know what is possibly wrong with my AC sys. Thanks

Ants in the contactor or a contactor that is worn real bad would be the first place to look!
