I bought an acer extensa 4420-5239 for college. The sticker says it has an AMD 64 Athlon x2. I thought it ment that the pc was a 64 bit. But when I go to System Info. It says that my system type is a 32-bit operating system. So I'm not understanding how this works. Can someone explain?

  1. Your processor is capable of using either 32 or 64 Bit operating systems the System info just shows you are running the 32 Bit version of Windows which to be honest, is just fine and is the most common version installed right now.

You can get 64 Bit versions of Windows but drivers are still much more readily available for the 32 bit version (as this is what most people still use). Unless you want to run more than 4GB of memory which you can't in 32 Bit systems then I would stick with what you have as it is just fine. 64 Bit is great for servers as they often need huge amounts of memory to efficiently work with giant databases etc but for home use, it isn't really needed at the moment.

  2. here is what you need to do. Go to start click it then go to computer

and click that choose property's it will be listed as systems type and it

will tell you if it is 32 bit or 64 bit.

  3. sounds to me like your computer is built for 64bit but the operating system is only 32 bit. Windows and other operating systems come in 32 bit and 64 bit structures. you can have 64 bit hardware but without the right software (operating system) you can't take full advantage of it.

  4. Yes, your computer is 64 bit, which means that the processor is 64 bit. your OS is 32 bit, which means it is made for computers with a 32 bit processor. you could get a 64 bit os, but i hear it is very finicky, and difficult to use.
