Is my TV or aerial to blame?

My old SDTV has stopped receiving a picture and I don't know if my TV or aerial is to blame? I have freeview and only received some channels and not all, but the other day I lost the picture on both freeview and terrestrial TV channels. My brother thinks my TV is on its last legs (and it is) but I should still be able to receive a picture right?

  1. Well it depends on WHAT you are left with after picture lossage.....have you tried a DVD player on it?

Do  these Freeview channels come into the TV set via Scart or other input jack or only on the aerial input ?

Because IF it comes in on the Aerial connections only (Freeview and Terrestrial) then you most likely have a bad tuner....and if that TV is less than 13 years old, you can get a new tuner for it....

    BUT

If your Freeview uses the Scart or any other INPUT, Then just toss the TV and follow your brother's recommendations...

And what are you left with?

Is the picture weak? Not Bright? Sharp? Good color?  Does it display a picture in one or two minutes, or does it take 5 minutes?

That does indicate CRT failure....and  I wouldn't put a tuner into a TV set like that....Like you said, you and your brother both think it's on it's last legs, but these are the indicators of poor picture tube emissions.

  2. Try another tv to substitute for yours.

If it works ok, then it's your tv set's the problem.

In the US, broadcast stations'll change to digital-only transmission Feb.17,2009.

Most cable companies'll continue to broadcast in digital as well as analog, till that date.

After that, without an aftermarket digital tuner, your old CRT won't be able to tune in anything but static.

    Good Luck!
