One of my cars was just in an accident. A friend of mine was driving my car and hit someone from behind, basically totaled my car. I own another car of which I have to renew the insurance on. Due to that accident is my insurance premiem going to raise. By the way I live in south florida if that makes a difference.

  1. I'm not an insurance specialist, but I think that every time you make a claim, that bumps your "risk" factor up and your premium goes up accordingly. So yes, I think your auto insurance premium will increase as a result of the accident.

  2. Well, I think it could go either way.  I would guess that your insurance will probably go up if you filed a claim for a totaled vehicle, but you never know.  If this is your only insurance claim, then you might not be hurt too much from it.

I would recommend comparing a few quotes from different insurance companies as well as your own before you renew your policy.  It is always good to shop around to see if you can find a cheaper deal on insurance every year before you renew.  Just because your company offered you the best deal when you first signed your policy doesn't mean they still will.  You might find that your insurance company is going to raise your rates because of the accident, and another insurance company might offer you a cheaper rate.

If you are interested in doing some research, the site below is a great resource because it allows you to compare quotes for all of the insurance companies in your area for free so you can find the cheapest rate possible.

    Good Luck!

  3. My car was in 2 accidents in the last 4 years .. my insurance  HAS  NOT gone up .  Last accident was only a few months ago .... I do know that different companies treat their customers differently.

  4. No one on yahoo can give you a guarantee since they are not your agent or insurance company.

My BEST ADVISE is to get in contact with your insurance company and ask questions.  Basic questions to ask them would be:  are my rates going to change or will I be surcharged for this loss? ;  how much was paid out for this loss? ;  Do I currently have any discounts on my policy which could be removed due to this loss?

BUT based on what you have indicated more than likely your premium will increase (your car was totaled and the other car was rear ended) .  Even though your friend was the operator of the vehicle, the insurance for the car is in your name and it probably will effect your premium.
