Question:

Is my baby boy overweight?

My paediatrician told me to reduce the amount of formula I was giving to my 5 month old son to the under 4 month old amount. I gave him formula as directed on the tin but the Dr says he is overweight and could end up with bullying issues once he starts school. He is 10.2kg and 74cm long. He has chubby cheeks but does not look out of proportion. He is content, happy and eating and sleeping perfectly. After reducing the formula for 1 week he lost 300g and was a little unsettled but OK. What do you think?

  1. I don't know kg. But at 5 months my daughter was 17lbs.

  2. I think your baby is on the upper side on the range of healthy weight for a baby that age. I would just let him drink as much as he was however as I really don't think it will effect him later on. My  children have always been on the higher weight range as babies but as soon as they get mobile, start crawling and walking they seem to loose alot of their puppy fat.If then they start to look a bit chubby at a later age (say 2 or 3) do something but if your baby is happy i would definitely leave it the  way you have been doing it. All my children are now so thin that i have to take in their pants so they fit and they do plenty of exercise and have a healthy diet.Don't worry about it and do what you feel comfortable with.A baby should be content not worrying about their weight. I don't feel the doctor should say such things either ,if anything he should be more concerned with the health side of things not the bulling side . To put your mind at ease mY first was 7.5kg at 3 months he is now 11 and has a size 6 waist but size 10 length....don't stress

  3. Having a infant LOSE weight seems unhealthy.  He is a big baby, but so is mine, 20 lbs at 5 months and my ped. said he looks perfectly healthy.  I would definetely seek the advice of another doctor.

  4. there are 2.2 lbs in a kg......so your son was about 22.44lbs. That does seem heavy (but not too heavy) for a 5 month old, but I don't like that they want you to cut back his food. If he eats that much it's because he wants that much. I would talk to your doctor about the causes of his overeating (why is he so hungry all the time?) Have them look into that and find out what's going on.....if you don't like what they tell you, find another doctor and get their opinion. I know it must be hard to cut him off when he's eating and still wants more. Just talk seriously with your doctor to try and find a cause for this and a solution. I owuld just talk to them, he just sounds to me like he's a big guy and a hungry growing boy.

  5. woo i dont know kg? i just know lb.
