my 5 month old has been getting up on all 4's and "rocking" then he sort of jumps like a frog to get closer to things. does this mean hes about to start crawling soon? im worried because we cant even get him to sit up on his own and ive read that skipping milestones are bad for his brain devolpment. but im so happy that he possibly will be crawling! any advice... and also how young is to young to let him start using the walker he just received?

  1. Most likely he is getting ready to crawl.  My 5 1/2 month old did the same thing!  It was about 2 1/2 weeks after he started "rocking" he was a crawler!

As for the milestones, EVERY BABY IS DIFFERENT!  He'll be fine, I promise!  :)

As for the walker, I don't recommend one....especially if you have stairs in your home.  Too many parents leave a baby in the walker too long because it's too convenient.

  2. It sounds like he's getting ready to crawl.  I'd be real careful with a walker.  I don't think they sell them any more as they have been deemed unsafe.  I think that if you use it responsibly it will be ok.  But you have to be vigilant that you watch him and don't let him be near any steps or anyplace where he can fall.  And don't put him in a walker until he can sit up well on his own.

  3. Don't worry about sitting up.  My daughter is 7 months old, and while she can sit up if put that way, she can't make herself sit up.  It'll happen in time.  It sounds like he's ready to start crawling.  My daughter just magically did it one day, and the house hasn't been safe from her since.  :)  I suggest you get one of those gate thingies that gives him a bigger area to crawl in without having to be redirected (away from cords and whatnot) all the time.

With the walker, just try it out every now and then.  He may dig it at first but only for a few minutes, or he may hate it entirely.  Don't force it on him, and let the experience be a fun one.  Eventually he'll really start to like it.  My daughter enjoys her exersaucers (or however you spell it) when we're working in the kitchen or playing outside.

  4. I wouldnt start him on the walker yet, but it sounds like he might start crawling.  I wouldn't worry about skipping milestones though.  My little brother walked before he crawled and he is normal.  He was walking at 8 mths and then he didnt crawl till 10 mths.  It was weird to me but then my mom told me that I did the same thing!

  5. I would have to say YES! My son did the same thing, hopping like a frog to get to things right before he started crawling.  When he started doing that my sister would get down on all 4's in front of him and say 'ribbit ribbit' and he would laugh hysterically and keep doing it to get to her. He was 5 months and 1 week when he actually crawled the first time.  I have never heard anything about skipping milestones is bad for brain development.  My daughter skipping crawling and went straight to walking.

As for the walker...as long as its in a VERY safe area and there is no chance they can fall down the stairs or pull anything down onto them and so on....then I would say go ahead and try it and see how he likes it.  I started my daughter in a walker at 6 months and she hated it.  She never really used it till she was taking 2-3 steps on her own.  I put my 6 month old son in the walker for the first time about 2 weeks ago and he LOVES it.  He just figured out how to make it go forward.  He only stays in it for about 20 minutes though cause he wants to be on the floor where he can crawl around.

    Congrats on the milestone.

  6. ok first, why would it be bad to skip a milestone? babies reach different milestones at different ages, there is no real first, second, or third for each baby. second, sitting is far different from crawling and yes, i think he will be crawling soon. around six months is normal to start crawling. sitting alone will come within the next couple months probably. i wouldnt worry yet. third, there is nothing wrong with introducing him to the walker yet. i started putting my son in his at 3 months (he could hold his head up) and he totally loves it! this might also help him with his balance so he can learn to sit up too!

  7. Sounds like he is! I wouldn't be to worried all babies develop differently my oldest didn't crawl till he was almost 8 months i think and my 4 month old is already rolling which is sooner than his brother did. So I think he's perfectly fine. On the walker I couldn't tell you cuz I never used one just for the fact that they say they're not good for them for different reasons. But congrats on babies development!

  8. He might be getting ready to crawl, or might not.  At two months old, my daughter ALMOST rolled over. She did this for MONTHS until she finally rolled the whole way.  Other times, she will jump from one milestone to the next in a short time.  My advice is to let him continue doing what he is ready to do.  He will crawl and sit and everything else in time.  Unless he is WAY behind, which he's not, you shouldn't be concerned.  As for the walker, he can probably sit in it if he can hold his back and head well.

  9. If he can hold his head up, he can use the walker. Or an exersaucer. My kids all rocked before they crawled. The last one also crawled before she sat up. She was 6 months. She sat on her own, from crawling at 7 months.

  10. oo yes!!..this is exciting...to get him going out something in front of him about 2 feet away...something like the remote sontrol, a fave toy, ect..he will get excited and try to reach for it..sooner or later he'll figure out what to do.  he will be crawling very soon. encourage him and play..have fun!
