Question:

Is my baby parakeet sick?

He is 2 months old and I brought him home yesterday. He seems to sleep a lot and sits at the bottom of the cage. He also has not said one word. When he does wake up all he does is preen his feathers and then goes back to sleep. Is this normal behavior for a baby budgie or should I be concerned?

  1. It doesn't sound  normal but you also have to give him time to get used to you and the new home.  After about 2-3 weeks see how he behaves and if he's still acting that way then you need to go to the vet.

    I hope I helped!

  2. it could just be the shock of being in a new home and he just needs time to settle in is he eating aswell becase some times new birds do get a bit frightened of new surroundings and go off there food give him a week or so and he should be fine I would get him checked out buy an avian vet anyway just to make sure he isnt hiding any illnesis hope everything goes ok enjoy your new bird

  3. "Yesterday" isn't very long ago.  Give him a few days.  It's not time for a CAT scan just yet.

Sleeping a lot is not a good sign.  He should be active.  Preening his feathers is normal.  Not singing after one day is standard.

You probably got this from a pet store.  When it dies, take it back for a replacement.

  4. It's not really normal, see a vet. Males are usually singing and excited.

  5. I would be concerned. It is not normal to sit at the bottom of the cage. Birds are good at hiding illness. I would have him checked out.  Yes he is probally stressed from being moved from his original place to your home, but the sitting at the bottom of the cage is a bit concerning.

  6. you sould be a little concered when i got my first parakeet he was qeiut but when i turn ed the music on hed go crazy. or it could be that hes lonely. and do you you have lots of toys and perches because thats what all parakeets need.
