Question:

Is my bank right to do this?

They say stores charge them when I use my bank Debit card to purchase goods, so my bank says it will charge me $0.30 each time if I use my bank Debit card at a store.

Can someone answer this? Do I need to switch banks?

  1. You need to switch banks, they charge stores transaction fees for you to make a debit purchase!! I have wells fargo and they do not charge for debits.

  2. Here's the thing... when you use debit, like when you enter your pin number, it charges the bank.  when you use your card as credit, don't use your pin but run it as credit instead of debit, then it charges the store you purchased the merchandise from.  some banks like to charge you if you use debit, because it charges them.  that's why alot of banks do rewards points for people who use their debit cards as credit, so that the bank doesn't get charged.  there are some banks that let you use your debit card as debit and don't charge you.  research it and look around to see what bank charges you to enter your pin and who doesn't.  you may find better service elsewhere.

  3. Find another bank.

If a store accepts a credit or debit card, the store pays the fee.

One store I use has calculated which type of card is cheaper when (it switches at around $20) and always asks if they can run it as a debit if the amount is high enough.  Most of the customers know the owner and are happy to save him money when they can.

The only time I've had my bank charge me is in cash-back ATM situations or when using the card in another country.

  4. Then again, there is a store in San Diego where we often shop, and they request that we use our debit cards, rather than credit cards, because THEY have to pay a fee when credit cards are used, but not when debit cards are.

I know banks charge a fee for using ATM machines, but had not heard of customers being charged for using debit cards in stores. Can it also depend on how much you keep in your account? Sometimes banks waive certain fees if they are having the use of a lot of your money!

  5. It depends also coz some stores will charge your debit card as a credit card or ask you to use it as credit vs debit. But either case I've never been charged for using my debit card as a credit card.

Definately change banks. Sounds like your bank is trying to make money from you~!

  6. Not every bank does this, but it’s not an uncommon practice. You can circumvent it by choosing a credit transaction and signing the receipt instead of utilizing the PIN system.

  7. switch banks quickly!!!!!   the banks charge the stores a fee for allowing them the privilege of having credit and debit service to get paid!  if your bank is gonna charge you too, then they are crooks!  by the way, what bank is it???

  8. Yes they can and do charge you for the use as a Debit Card,

  9. Stores don't charge for Debit transactions!

Your bank is messing with you and charging you for it.

    Change Banks NOW !

Try a Credit Union, they are Great!

  10. The store PAYS for credit/debit card transactions.  Someone in this scenario is LYING.  Find a new bank yesterday.

  11. Typically if you use it as a "debit" card, i.e. input your PIN, then you will be charged by your bank. If you use it as a credit card then there should be no charge. If your bank wants to start charging you for using it as a CC, I would look at changing banks.
