Question:

Is my betta too aggressive to breed?

I placed my betta with a female in hopes of having a successful spawn. He was far too aggressive and ended up killing her (quickly too..I was monitoring the tank very closely). I know that there isn't always the right chemistry between bettas, and that changing partners is a solution, but I don't want another female to die. Is it possible that he's just too aggressive to breed? Has anyone had this problem before? What worked for you?

  1. Wait till the female displays vertical stripes and have big bellies... My bettas just finished spawning this morning... What i did, i placed the female on the sight of the male in a tank, but not in contact. At least once should be on a different container but in the same tank (preferably, the female.  Then the male starts building bubble nest.  Then, when the bubble nest seems fine, try releasing the female. If the female goes to the male,  they are ready to breed. there will be a bit of fighting going on but just keep an eye on them.  Sometimes females also seem to be aggressive.  My female bit my male betta, quite the opposite of whats supposed to be gong on.  But, yea, just try.  You can research more on google how to breed bettas...

  2. They are also known as Siemese fighting fish, so obviously you can tell by the name that its not uncommon for them to fight. I heard its very hard to breed them as they usually have an agressive nature, thus, why they are so expensive.

Sorry, this is all i know. Im not even a fish-owner.

  3. You might not have had a female betta, but another type of male betta. Some males can have the short fins like females, and people can mix them up as being females. Or the female was too old to spawn and couldn't handle his advances. It is no new thing for a male to kill a female. If you want to breed bettas, find a private breeder and get a couple pairs that are brothers and sisters. Yes bettas make better fry if they are related. And make sure you get some young bettas. Most bettas that you get from the store are way too old to breed, and will most likely die after the spawn.
