SO, I got a camera for my birthday, and My Niece who is 3 took it, hid it, and broke the disk. I found a USB cord around my house that fits it, but no disk, is it like, completely worthless now? Or how do I fix it?

  1. Do you mean the software disk? No biggie. Companies like Nikon, Kodak, etc have the same software available for downloading on their website. Just go to the site of whatever company your camera is from and look around in the download or customer support section.

The software disk contains 2 things: a program to transfer pictures from the camera to the computer with the included USB cord, and an image viewing/ editing program.

Strictly speaking, you don´t even need any of that. If you can pop the camera's memory card into your computer (you can with most new computers) you can simply copy the picture files to the hard disk from the Windows Explorer. As for the editing program, you can download other ones that are just as good or better for free. Picasa comes to mind for simple stuff.

Happy shooting! And if your niece scratches your lens, clobber her over the head with a pillow. (You can tell your aunt & uncle that some dude on the internet said it was okay ;-)

  2. You will have to buy a new "disk" ... Hopefully you what your are calling a disk is really a memory card ... buy a new own and keep your camera away form every one ... it is your camera and you need to keep it out of others hands.

If by "disk" you mean the one that came with your camera to install on your computer, once it is installed you can use the photo program that came with your camera.  You can always buy a card reader and use it and your computer skills to copy your images from it to your computer.  Inexpensive photo editing programs can be purchased for under $100 ... Photoshop Elements is but one
