Question:

Is my car's gas just disappearing?

Lately, my gas tank has been drying up without me even driving it. I'll put in maybe 1/4 to 1/2 tank one day, and withing a day or to as much as 1/8 to 1/4 of it is just gone. I've heard that summer weather can affect the gas level, but this is insane.

  1. my mom's gas tank started to mess up when she changed the type.It evaporated. What type of car do you have?Buy a new gas tank it may be evaporating

  2. Sounds like some one is stealing it.

  3. Do you live in the city? If you're parking on the street, someone's probably stealing it. Put a camera on your car facing the gas tank, you might be able to catch a picture of your thief. Or just hang around discreetly near your car until you see the culprit.

  4. if there was a leak, i'm fairly certain it would evaporate quickly so i don't think you WOULD notice a pool of gas underneath.

also, does your gas latch open from the outside or is there a latch that opens it from inside? is it possible someone could be stealing your gas?

  5. It could be a bad gas cap, dirty air filter, low tire pressure.

  6. Get a gas cap lock to be sure no one is taking it.But i think that is just insane to be magically losing that much.

  7. It is quite possible that the top of your gas tank is corroded out and the fuel is simply evaporating off.

It should show some wetness upon the tank's side(s) after driving the car in a manner that would cause the gas to slosh around enough to have hit the top of the tank and leak out wet.

or it is being syphoned out as has been suggested

  8. You may still have your gas. You could possibly have a bad float in your gas tank. If it has a pinhole in the float it would cause it to slowly sink below the fuel level as the float filled up and showing up on your gauge a disapearing fuel when it actually is still there.

  9. Maybe someone is siphoning your gas.
