Is my cat maine coon?

Last year my bus driver gave me a kitten. The mom cat had gotten pregnant and had 2 kittens, one died and she abandoned the other when it was 2 days old. I knew how to raise kittens so i ended up taking it. Its now a healthy 8 month old :) Anyway I was looking up cat breeds online and i found Maine Coon. I read about the cat and found that there is a lot of qualities that my cat has. One for instance is that at 8 months he is already bigger then my other cats (ranging from 4 to 7 years) he has very long hair, tuffs of hair on the tips of his ears and between his toes. He also has very long chest hair that almost looks like a mane of a lion. He has a fluffy tail that we say is a feather duster! He also loves to get in the bath tub after u have taken a shower so he can play in the water. I was wondering if this is just a coincidence of if my cat could be part maine coon. Thanks

  1. Here are some more ways to confirm your suspicions even if he is a "half-breed:"  His voice, does he have a shrill trill, does he contribute what a fellow Main Coon owner refers to as cat down; hair clumps on your rug even without you grooming him?  The feather or baby bottle brush is a gimme as well as your other appearance notes.  The water play is evident in other breeds as he may be just looking to cool off or amuse himself, but the quick bonding with a human M8 is very typical of Maine Coons and if you've kept one in your house for two or three days as a rescue or a deliberate choice, forget about placing him elsewhere because you are now among we priviliged.  I took in an abandoned MC, had him neutered to make him a more likely prospect for re-homing as I already had two queens and somehow a year has passed between us with no end of delight.  Lucky you, lucky me.

  2. No doubt about it, I'd say.  And how lucky you are, because Maine Coones (I've added the "e" to the name, even though there isn't one, because the Yahoo censors bleep out the actual word....) make wonderful pets.  My own cat is mostly MC, and without doubt, he is the best cat I have ever had.  Not only is he a good-looking dude, he is also a very mellow fellow, very intelligent and lively and sociable, and has never, ever scratched or bitten anyone in spite like many cats do.  May you enjoy your cat's companionship for many years to come!

  3. its possible, if ur really that interested try taking it to a vet to see if the vet can tell its breed

  4. sounds like it!  sounds gorgeous!

  5. probally my maine coon is big too and your description sounds right

  6. Sounds like a  strong possibility - but ask your local vet for his/her professional opinion.  Oooo - also sounds like you have a bunch of kitties, and I am so jealous!  I love all sorts of animals, and we have two great dogs ~ but my husband, who loves them too, said adding  a cat to our family would be too much .... (sob!)

  7. Sounds like it to me ... Probably not pure breed though.

YOUR CAT IS NOW OLD ENOUGH TO HAVE SPAYED/ NEUTERED!

This way you will not be contributing to the cat overpopulation!

AND be a responsible pet owner!

  8. He could be part but it's not likely.  Maine Coon breeders don't tend to allow their cats to randomly mate with domestics.  And with 97% of cats on this planet no particular breed that's likely what your cat is.  Cats have been domesticated for nearly 4,000 years and crossbred for just as many so the majority of cats bear no traits whatsoever of any particular breed.  Most cats have slight tufts on the tips of their ears.  Maine Coons have VERY large pointed ears and the tufts are VERY long - http://www.saudeanimal.com.br/imagens/ma...  Your cat is a "Domestic Longhair" - love him regardless.

I hope your bus driver has spayed this cat.  The fact it only had two kittens probably meant it was too young to be pregnant in the first place.  And every litter he/she allows it to have means that many more kittens and cats put to death at local shelters since they'll take homes from them.  And I hope yours has been neutered.

  9. my ex f had one of those. it was atleast 20 lbs and it chased the neighborhood pitbull out of his yard and down the road. its fluffy, its huge, its like a mini lion and it loves water. sounds like you have maine coon on your hands!! they are veyr loyal and amazing animals!! take good care of him :)

  10. my very first cat was a maine coon cat. he deff sounds like a maine coon but, my cat never liked the water!! they are wonderful cats. and congratulations, its nice to know that there are ppl out there who still care for their animals, after animal abuse has become so much more popular (for some reason.. idk)

  11. Yes it seems you have a maine coon. they are very friendly and probably will not give you much trouble =)
