Question:

Is my chihuahua pregnant? please let the answer be no!?

My chihuahua (and a little mini pincher(sp?) mixed in) is 3 years old. She never leaves the house and I've been too afraid to get her fixed (she's not a very social dog). Recently, my sister moved in with her 10-12 month old male puppy. My chihuahua was in heat about 3-4 weeks ago but she was humping the puppy instead of him humping her. A few days ago she started being "motherly" to her toys and just now I noticed that she's lactating.

Does anyone know how far into a actual pregnancy she would start lactating? Could it also just be a false pregnancy? I'm going to take her to the vet tomorrow but would like some help now. I'm so afraid she is pregnant :( Despising the vet or not, if she's not pregnant, I'm going to have to suck it up and get her fixed!

  1. If she was on heat 4 weeks ago then she shouldn't start lactating ina pregnancy for at least another 3-4 weeks. It sounds more like a pseudopregnancy to me, but if it is a real pregnancy then something is going wrong.

Getting her desexed will solve the problem, as it is possible that she's pregnant. Even if she is pregnant right now it's still safe to spay her.

  2. Hi, in your question you mention her behaving in a maternal manner towards toys.  Is she also stashing any treats like milkbones? Our dog did both starting about 3 weeks before she gave birth. A female in heat may act as the aggressor towards mating as well, humping the male in order to get him to reciprocate. Well I can't say with certainty that your girl is pregnant there are some positive indicators. You probably know that the  pregnancy term is 60 days roughly in length. You may be able to feel pups if you gently rest your hand on her abdomen while she is laying.

  3. males can breed at that young of a age, hopefully it is false pregnancy, but usually its not, good luck though.
