Is my child ready for a regular cup?

my daughter is 2.5 and can drink out of a regular cup but she always puts up a fight when i give her something to drink in a cup rather than a sippy cup. we started out when she was 2 with giving her a regular cup at dinner so that she would eat rather than drink all of her water. now we try to give her a regular cup throughout the day since i know she can drink out of one correctly. she just throws a fit. she isnt as bad as she used to be.. before she would go as far as laying on the floor and kicking. she has been in time out so much for the tantrums that now she just says no and whines when i give her a cup but she doesnt lay on the floor screaming. i have noticed that she only takes a drink or two out of the cup and is finished with it. if i gave her a sippy she would drink the entire thing. any advice? is it too soon? should i be giving her a sippy or does she need all of that liquid throughout the day? she is healthy and active. thanks

  1. obviously she does need to be taking in a decent amount of fluid throughout the day, but I think you are doing absolutely the right thing, persevere with it and give her time. If you feel she is not getting enough fluid then give her an occasional drink of water from a sippy cup (avoid squash or juices in this sort of cup, they hold the cup in their mouths and the sugar can cause their teeth to rot!)

Perhaps continue with a normal cup at meal times when she is sat down and a sippy cup of water when she is active and playing.

I don't think she's too early it will just take patience and time.

  2. try alternating the sippy cup with the normal cup, every kid is different and takes things at their own pace, my daughter just turned 2 and still prefers her bottle, although she can drink out of a sippy cup and a normal cup, kids are meant to have their little quirks thats what makes us love them,  your doing a great job with your little girl don't worry and if she insists on her sippy cup for a little longer let her have it.

  3. At 2 years old is when you are suppose to be introducing the regular cup because sippy cups aren't to be used after 3 years old unless you really need a spillproof cup for traveling or something but even then they have sports bottles for that.  When they go into preschool at 3 years old they aren't allowed to use sippy cups.

  4. I say let her use the sippy cup. When she is ready she will switch to a regular cup trust me my little sister went through the same thing. Once she saw everyone else drinking out of regular cups, she wanted to also.

  5. Keep the sippy for threwout the day for now, but make her use a regular cup with meals then slowly switch out the sippy more. Try cups with straws to.

    Little steps.

  6. My son will be three in October. I usually just ask my son what he wants. At daycare, he only uses regular cups, but at home unless he's eating a meal, he usually wants a sippy so he doesn't spill. However, the whole family uses bottle with the spouts you lift when we raen't at the table, so I guess he just like to do what we do. Sometimes, though, he asks for a regular cup, but he gets upset if he spills.

  7. Give her another one and if she throughs another fit put her in time out
