Question:

Is my computer able to be fixed?

I tried the XP SP2 on my old computer a while ago and it ended up with the same problem that most people got with it– the winsrv/blue screen. I put it aside to fix for a rainy day. I brought it back out today with instructions on how to fix the problem but now I’ve got a different problem. When I turn it on, it will go to that first screen with the options of F2– Set Up & F12– Boot Menu. Then, instead of the winsrv/blue screen, it automatically goes to a blank/black screen with a flashing underscore. It won’t let me type anything in it, it just beeps at me. When I restarted it and pressed the F2 button it went right back to the same screen. The F12 button does nothing except beep. I’ve tried this both with a Windows XP reinstallation CD in the CD drive and without.

I’d rather not pay to have someone fix it if I can do it myself. Is there anything I can do or is it just gone?

  1. You say it just beeps at you, is it a constant beep, beep, beep at regular intervals that continues until you switch it off - then you have a memory module error. Try simply taking the module out of its slot (all of them if more than one) and then put them back in. You may find it will boot to BIOS and then you can solve your other BSOD error. While you have the side cover off have a look at the cables to the drives (HD and CD) and remove and refit. Don't forget to unplug the PC from the mains supply and ground yourself before touching any of the components inside the box. Memory modules are particularly sensitive to ESD (Electro-Static Discharge)

  3. Could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software. This  problem can be solved by uninstalling new software, updating device drivers and making minor configuration changes . From http://fixit.in/bluescreenofdeath.html . You can also run a free registry scan using utilities from http://re7.info

  4. Hi mandy

It sounds like you are having problems with your operating system which is not loading correctly  you could fix it by formatting your hard drive and reinstalling your xp os    and programs

If you have the xp cd just put it in the cd drive and boot your computer  select boot from cd  and follow instuctions.

If you have a boot disk on floppy disk you can use that to boot to the a:/prompt  then use fdisk to partition the drive and then reboot and  format the drive

  5. if its over 3 years old its not worth fixing i would take it to a computer specialist if its under 3 years old if its older buy a new one

  6. hm ok so its definitely not a bad motherboard because you get a boot screen hard drive could be bad because it seems like its not saving your operating system correctly i had that same problem with mine but it was just a bad operating system install

  7. Bios/Boot Problem?  Maybe.  If I were you, I'd try booting with a Linux (Ubuntu) boot CD and see if you get anywhere with that.

If not, it could be a bad hard drive.  It's hard to say.

If I were you, I'd test things out.  For example, first make sure the CD drive boots first and boot from a bootable disk.  If that doesn't work, replace the old hard drive and see if that helps.  (Install an operating system on it to test.)

Worst case scenario: RAM problem.  Easily fixed, though.
