Question:

Is my corn snake large enough to eat a small rat?

It won't hold still long enough to be measured, but it's last shed was 4' 9" long.

I've been feeding 'monster mice' (the largest size of mice) every 6-7 days, and the snake always strikes at food immediately, which I think is a sign of hunger.

  1. Yea, you could....and should. But just keep eye on the snake just in case. Because if he does throw up(which I don't think he will) then don't try it again until he gets bigger. And the small rat should check in full for a while too =] Also remember not to pick him for at at least 48 hours, especially when there is a pretty big rat in him.

I fed my 2 1/2 feet king snake a full grown mice so your corn snake should be able to eat it.

A snake's jaw can open pretty big and also their skin can stretch out a lot...so you would be surprise on what size he could take down....lol

Hope this could help out a little bit! =]

  2. h**l yeah!!

  3. Judging from the length you've given, it sounds like your corn is at least a few years old and could easily take a rat. Start small, of course. You can usually find weanling rats that aren't much bigger than jumbo mice or I would wager that your snake is big enough to go straight to small/medium rats. So long as the rat's head/shoulders are no bigger around than say 1-1/2 the girth of your snake you should have no trouble.

  4. i have a 2 ball pythons that same length and they eat medium rats! definitely upgrade in size. try rat hoppers for him.

  5. well mine is aound that size and eats small rats, it takes him a while longer but hes had 2 now and so far so good ( i mean 1 on each week not 2 at once)

  6. if you're feeding it large mice, small rats a lot of times are just as big as large mice (depending on the description of large I guess) but from the sounds of things, I would assume so. my kings are 3 inches less than 4 ft and take small rats so your corn surely must be able to from what you told me.

  7. yeah he is hungry but get a string and measure him then measure the string......then tell us how big he is around
