Question:

Is my daughter weird for being so young and getting this concept?

My 21 month old daughter 'knows' there is a baby 'in my tummy' and that 'he will come out'. We watch birthing videos together and she always hugs my belly after she sees the baby come out of the Mommy. She knows the difference between boys and girls (body parts wise) and she knows 'our Carcle' (Carl) will be a boy. Today I showed her what an umbilical cord was and explained that it was how the Mommy feeds the baby inside her tummy and that's where belly buttons come from. She went and got her Fischer-Price fire truck and used the hose on it to fill up her belly button. She loves to cuddle my belly and talks to it and kisses, and hugs it all the time. I know she gets the concept but isn't it a little young? She's smart and advanced for her age so it's normal to me, but I was just wondering what other women have experience with their children and a new addition coming. How old/young were your kids when they 'got' the concept?

  1. I don't think so. My 2 yo gets it.

  2. man she can still be excited after watching a childbirth video? this is strange but i guess you should be happy. most grown ups cant handle that.

  3. No, it's not weird at all.  My daughter just turned 5 but before that (I'm 9 months preg) we had bought her an anatomy book explaining where babies come from and how everything works.  I think it's important to educate your children.  Great work Mom!

Good luck with your pregnancy too.

  4. im not a mother but i dont find it strange but she must be pretty smart because i would say normally 3-5 year olds would be like that

but now many mothers show there child birthing videos

  5. You have done an excellent job of explaining things to her.

  6. My daughter was about her age when I had my second baby and she was totally the same way. She was so excited and totally got it. Kids just get it better than others. My son was about that age and wasn't interested at all when I was pregnant with my third and but we had my daughter who was then barely 4 in the delivery room up by my head for the delivery. She is now 5 and still will be when this one is born. She is following my week by week with me and asks to see the baby on the calendar. As soon as she found out I was pregnant she asked if she go to be there for this one too. She is so excited

  7. This age children can understand more then we think. They just have to  be exposed  to knowledge .If you give her as much information in other areas as you gave her in"birth concept" she will benefit  greatly from it and she will surprise you even more.Just be careful some information that you give her she will bring to pre-k.Some mothers may not appreciate it.

Enjoy your sweet, smart little one

  8. When I was pregnant with my twins, my oldest daughter was 1 year old. she liked the "bubbies" in my tummy and she always kissed them good-night. She wanted them to come out and play with her, and I knew she understood what was going on.
