Question:

Is my dog going to die?

She's a 12 year old Golden Retriever. Yesterday we came home to find her wedged under a door that we think she pushed over onto herself (based on her behavior,we have a feeling she put herself there). She's been acting strange since. She doesn't recognize us and won't look at us. She's been head-pressing, falling over, she seems intoxicated, she groans once in a while, and she keeps trying to wedge herself into and through smaller spaces than herself. From what we can see she hasn't vomited. She keeps wagging her tail and panting heavily. Her eyes have a kind of bluish haze over them. My father took her to the vet today, but I was wondering if anyone has experience the same thing and can offer any suggestions as to what it is. The family has said goodbye to her because we think we might have to put her down.

I don't think this is relevant, but she has a history of ear infections, history of paw biting, and about a month ago she had an abscess tooth infection which has cleared up.

Any advice is appreciated.

  1. My dog had the same problem she went blind. My dog got limes disease medicine because they tracked a little in her blood test and now its a miracle because she can see again! we weren't quite sure what was wrong, but anyway i think your dog is blind and she is trying to put herself in smaller places then herself because she doesn't know where it is and she could be panting hard because it is stressful for her to be this way, i think the rolling could just be that she has a skin problem and there is a certain kind of mite that you cant see even under a telescope maybe that could be an explanation my dog itches herself in this way also she groans we are guessing because she is so itchy! Maybe she is the same way.

i hope your dog will be better soon!

  2. My uncle that lives near me, had 4 dogs. One of them had the bluish haze over one of her eyes, and the vet said she was blind in that eye. She also was a very old dog, and wobbled a lot. Perhaps the falling over and head pressing is due to blindness?

  3. I am so sorry about your dog.

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.

I could see that you were crying, you found it hard to sleep.

I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,

    "It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."

I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea

You were thinking of the many times your hands reached down to me.

I was with you at my grave today, you tend it with such care.

I want to re-assure you, that I'm not lying there.

I walked with you towards the house as you fumbled for your key.

I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said, "It's me."

You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair

I tried so hard to let you know that I was standing there.

It's possible for me to be so near you every day

To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."

You sat there very quietly, then smiled; I think you knew...

In the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.

The day is over... I smile and watch you yawning

And say "good-night, God bless, I'll see you in the morning."

And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,

I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.

I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.

Be patient, live your journey out... then come home to be with me.
