Last night my dog had a smal amount of mucus coming out of her virgina and it should be about time for her to go into labor. It has been 24 hrs sense that happened and still nothing. She is still eating healthy and her nose is still wet and cold but still isn't trying to have the babys. Is this alright?

  1. yes it is normal i breed great danes and that's what they do when there nearly ready to go into labour. check her nipples if theres milk coming out of them she is nearly ready. keep her warm and relaxed and all the best

  2. Well, her nose being wet has nothing to do with anything.  As far as eating that doesn't really tell you anything either.  Some females will eat up to the time they whelp and some stop eating the week before they whelp.  The mucous doesn't really indicate too much either, that could happen up to a week or so before she whelps.  There are so many different signs that tell when a female is ready to whelp, and all females are different.  One of the best ways I have found is to watch her temp.  A dogs normal anal temp is around 102.  If it goes below 100 then you should expect birth in 24 hours or sooner.  She will get very nervous acting, she may pant a lot, she may start digging at a certain place in the house (nesting), she may l**k or bite at her back end, she may act like she wants outside to go potty.  As someone else said, really watch her very closely if you let her outside - always go with her and make sure she isn't trying to have pups outside.  A first mom may think that the feeling means she has to p**p when in reality she is feeling the pressure of a puppy getting ready to be born.

  3. When are her puppys due?

Dogs stop eating and drinking about 24 hours before going into labor.

Also take her temperature if her temperature is above normal then that's a sign she could be going into labor.

  4. Check her temperature and keep checking it. you want be 100 and staying there.

Just like human women dogs loose their muccus plug before labor actually beings. Her cervix is open at the moment. Just keep an eye on her and if you have to go anywhere leave someone else with her and have your cell phone on you. If this is her first litter and yours make sure you have your vet and local e vets number on hand for whenever she does go into labor.

Not ever ***** stops eating before labor and as long as she keeps l*****g it her nose will be wet and cold.

ADD: When she goes outside to use the bathroom go with her in case she decides to whelp outdoors

  5. There is a lot involved with breeding and whelping a healthy litter. It requires a lot of reading and study on the part of the owner and is not for the inexperienced.

What is normal and not normal depends on the *****.

You really need to be communicating with your vet and asking him/her any questions you many have.

Who is going to help you if there are problems when the puppies start to come?

Your vet needs to be available to you.

  6. You can tell when she is going into labor when her water breaks. She should start to deliver shortly after. You can tell when she starts to simmer down and have contractions and really have not much of an appetite.

  7. What you saw was your dog loosing her mucus plug.  This is not a sign that she will go into labor in 24 hours.  This is a sign she is getting ready her body set for the labor to come.

This can happen up to a few days before real labor begins.  She just not ready yet!  You need to watch her very carefully and be ready for the real thing from this point on.

  8. 9 times out of 10, they will wait until the wee hours of the morning to whelp. If she has been having contractions for over 2 hrs with no pup presenting, then yes, there could very well be a problem. If she is not having contractions, just take her out on a leash for a short walk, when you come in, put her in the whelping box and leave her be. Check on her periodically throughout the night.
