Is my dream of being a veterinarian out of reach?

I'll be a senior in high school this year with average grades(due to lack of interest). Since college is just around the corner I'm constantly asking myself what career I'm interested in and the all that comes to mind is a vet. I LOVE animals and want nothing more than to help them while at the same time make enough money to support myself finacially.

However, I'm very scared that I will not be able to handle vet school. I know that when I put my mind to something I can get it done, but a lot of people's comments on how hard vet school is has been throwing me off alot. The last thing I want to do is fail. Not to mention my math skills are not all that great and I'm sure you have to do alot of math to get through the school.

What I'm asking is if pushing myself to achieve me dream of being a vet is to far out of reach? Does anyone have personal experience with vet school? What should I do to prepare myself for my future as a vet?

Thank you for taking the time to read this and answering my questions.

  1. No, but if you keep saying you cant do it yes!  You can do anything if you believe in yourself!

  2. hi. Manda, nothing is impossible if you put your mind to iT .! having said that, let me tell you my experience,  I am the worse math person you will ever find. But. I always wanted to be a nurse, so i took a chance did every step i needed to do step of a time toke me longer than the average bear, but finally I've finish and now i know for sure that the stars is the limit is all up to you, go to the local community college, and find out what you will need to take that rout, you'll need pre- requisite. take one Class of the time, the math you'll need is high school math, fraction and staff like that take a pharmacology class you will need that for any medical field, I say GO FOR IT , YOU CAN DO-IT, JUST BELIEVE IN YOUR SELF. GOOD LUCK.

  3. I HATED school in when I was younger. I found myself in college, got a 3.7 gpa, took the tests and made it into med school.

It's not hard stuff to learn, just a HUGE volume.

If you want it, do it.

    Work at a vet office.

Volunteer with some kind of anial program, they love that

See a college guidance counselor about what classes to take.

Get 3.5 or higher, take the entrance test, interview, and your in.

  4. I was in your shoes, and I hated school.  I ended up going to a business school that took two years of college education and crammed it into ten months by cutting out the BS of Liberal arts.  I wish I did get a degree, but I did just fine.  And because I enjoyed what I was doing, I exceeded well in my classes and had an 3.84 GPA at graduation.  I never got honor roll or anything like that in highschool.  But I am now in my late 30's and just got my real estate license a little over a year ago, and that was a tough test to pass, but I did it.  Don't let other peoples' comments bring you down.  If you really enjoy animals and being a vet is what you really want, I suggest you give it a try.  If it doesn't work out, that's ok.  You're not a failure or a loser.  You just gained more experience for you to add to your own personal book or so to speak.  I wouldn't stress out about what everyone says about school.  You may find that your courses are very easy for you moreso than someone else.

    Good luck!

  5. Hi Manda. I don't have the EXACT kind of experience that you are having right now, but my dad did. He was just o.k. in math, and didn't do super great in high-school or in college, but he got just decent grades. However, he really wanted to be a doctor, and had the same fears that you did about getting in and passing, and doing well. He just decided that he needed to try, because if he didn't, he'd always wonder what would've happened if he had just tried. So, he applied, and with the help of some connections, and God (He prayed and asked God to help him) - he got in! Now, he had to work very hard, and some things that came easily to some people, he had to work extra hard at. But he made up his mind that he had made a decision, and was going to DO IT!! So, he did! He also was married to my mom, and had two little kids at home while he was in medical school, but he did it. He worked like a dog, but he did it. Now he has been a successful pediatric cardiologist for almost 30 years, and he and my mom have a very nice life. They deserve it, as they both worked hard together to achieve thier dreams. My point is Manda, that you can achieve ANYTHING if you set your mind and heart to do it! There will be many opportunities that you will face to tempt you to give up and quit, but if you fight through all that, with the goal in mind, YOU CAN DO IT GIRL!! Go for it!! Otherwise you will look back and regret that you never tried. By the way, I'm a total animal lover, and think it's awesome that want to be a vet. I would've done it, but don't have the stomach for it! :-)

    Good Luck!!
