They are already paying for the course, but since I won't be "at work", do they still need to pay me 8 hours? or not?

  1. Yes, if it is a course that is work-related.  Is it something that will help you advance in your career?  Is it something that your employer approved?  If so, then they should pay you for a regular day.

  2. If this is a required course and your employer is paying for your attendance, they certainly pay you regular wages.  Look at it this way- you are performing all the duties of your job, just at a different location.  If your employer tries to stiff you contact the local workforce or state employment office or the US Dept. of Labor.

  3. If you didn't request a day off for personal reasons, the company should pay you.  This volunteering is just like any other volunteering the company might ask for.  If they asked for a volunteer to sweep the parking lot, you'd expect to get paid.  It just means they have somebody interested in doing this rather than drafting somebody and telling them to go.  You should get paid.
