Is my eye vision good enough to be a firefighter?

im nearsighted...my vision is -4.00 and i was wondering if thats good enough to become a firefighter. I think the standard is 20/30. But i dont know what that means. And i wear contact lenses..so i dont know if that helps or not...thanks

  1. I cant see why not. I'm a fire fighter, i'm nearsighted (although only -0.75) and a couple of my team mates have glasses and or wear contacts... one is nearsighted and wears -4.25 contacts I believe. I cant see why you shouldnt be able to join.

    Why not go down to your local firestation and ask them a few questions, I'm sure they'd answer them.

  2. NFPA 1001 Standard for Professional Qualifications for Firefighter states that your vision must be correctable to 20/30 with either glasses or contact lenses in order to become a firefighter. In other words, no mater what your vision problem is as long as gasses or contacts can allow you to see to 20/30, you can be a firefighter.
