Question:

Is my fathers car insurance still valid?

My dad died the beginning of this month. I'm here in his city clearing up details for his estate and needing to use his automobile to gather information for probate of his will. His insurance was paid up prior to his death for 6 months. I don't want any problems. Is this insurance still protecting his car?

  1. It should be, but certain companies have requirements that must be met.  You need to call the company or agent and find out if anything needs to be done in order to continue the policy.  In PA, with the company I work for, we need to change the name to "The Estate of...so and so".

  2. The insurance 'may" still be in effect but this does not mean it covers you. Check with his company.

  3. There's still insurance on the vehicle until the named insured requests it to be cancelled.

Since your father passed away, the insurance company will cancel the policy if the person in charge of his estate cancels the policy. If you're in charge of his estate then you need his death certificate, and send that to the company so they can pro-rate what he paid for.

There could be a possibility that there would be no coverage if you dirve his vehicle regularly. Call his insurance company to find out what their guidelines are. Companies differ in rules. The best thing to do so there can be coverage is to do the above mentioned, and purchase your own policy.
