Should the water level in my fish tank be lower to increase oxygen? I have a 29 gallon tank, will higher water levels hurt my fish? Thank you!

  1. I like to keep mine high to keep down the noise of water splashing into the tank.  I don't think the filter really adds much oxygen to the water anyway.

  2. No, just be sure to have an air stone (preferably more than one) to help aerate the water.  As long as you do that you should be able to fill the tank all the way up.

  3. No, with a proper sized filter and possibly an air tube (for bubbles) in your tank, most people fill them to where you can't see the top of the water line.

  4. Fill it up to the bottom of the plastic rim and get an air pump.  Your fish will love it.

  5. If you have a decent filter, there is no need to lower the water level. Simply because unless you overstock your tank, there should be enough oxygen in the water even without a lot of water movement.

  6. ANYou can lower the water level by an inch to allow the filter to dump water into the tank.  This will not hurt your fish.  Even having the water level close to the filter output works as well.  You are correct the filter does add the dissolved oxygen to the tank.

Don't bother getting an air stone, they do little to nothing for adding dissolved oxygen to the tank.  Keeping your water level 1/2 - 1 inch below the filter doesn't harm anything.  Just so the output allows the water to "ripple" across the surface of the tank level you are fine.

  7. What shape is the tank? rectangles are the best, as they provide the most surface area for oxygen to diffuse into the water. Unless its exceptionally tall, hiring the water level shouldn't do too much to be honest. the filter should help move the water around, if not you may want to consider getting an airstone and pump to help move the water around. more space for your fish would be much better than less, aquariums are designed to be full, and still accommodate any fishes needs, not harm them.
