I just got a hamster today. When i got my hamster she seemed fine. but i have looked at her carefully and she now looks either fat or pregnant. Sadly i do not know her age, but she was housed with males and females in the petstore. She looks like she has saddlebags on her sides... do you think she is pregnant??? if she is pregnant tips please! I really need to know!!!! if she is pregnant, could the babies get through 1 centimeter apart bars?

  1. pregnant

  2. leave her w/o company from other hamsters for about 1 month and try putting netting up if she has babies just to be safe

  3. i bought my hamster two days ago and she gave birth today to 8 your hamster will be

    *fat

    *mean

    *builds nest

    *lazy

  4. If she's pregnant you'll notice different behavior like more nesting and storing more food. Here's a good link about hammy pregnancy :

  5. Well, she can be pregnant, but she can also be ill. I had a female hamster and one day she suddenly looked pregnant, but I knew it's not possible, because she was housed alone in her cage. I took her to veterinarian and she told me my hammie had a disease called pyometra (uterus infection). The swelling of the stomach is caused by the puss filling the uterus. Pyometra is a serious disease (more common among older females who have never had babies) and must be treated with antibiotics. Sometimes the 1 week treatment is not affective and hysterectomy or a lifetime treatment with antibiotics is the only way.

Other symptoms of pyometra (except for the swelling) are especially excessive drinking, also loss of appetite and sometimes oozing of the pus. So, if your hammie has any of these symptoms, I'd take her to vet ASAP.

In case your hamster is pregnant, make sure she's got enough fluids expecially after the birth, otherwise she can start eating her babbies (especially if it's her first litter).  Adding fluid vitamins to her water would be wise too.

Yes, they can get through 1 cm apart bars or at least get hurt while trying, so I'd suggest aquarium instead.
