Question:

Is my hamster alright?

Today I was putting my hand in the cage to let him climb on, and he bit me really hard, so hard, that when I lifted my hand up he stayed on, so I had to yank him off and throw him back in the cage. When he landed he leaped up surprised and then scurried into his house. I was worried I hurt him, and I was wondering if you could answer these questions.

1. Will he be okay?

2. Is he gonna bite me more because I dropped him and possibly hurt him? Or will he stop biting cause he knows he'll get hurt?

3. My friend who was pet sitting him told me he was always crazy and bit after he had corn. Could that be the reason he was crazy and bit me?

4. How do I make him stop biting?

  1. Ok....

    1. He'll be fine.  They can take huge drops off of furniture so I doubt you harmed him.

    2.  Make sure you wash your hands before you pick him up.  You might have smelled like food to him.  Also, he may have bitten because you startled him.  Always speak softly before you pick him up.  I let my daughter's hammy come to me.

    3.  No I doubt corn had anything to do with it.

    4.  How old is he?  The younger he is, the more likely it is he will out grow his fearfulness and grow to love you.

  2. 1.He'll be fine coz sometimes i drop my hamster into his cage aswell.

2.Be careful with him and try to make him trust you by playing with him more and stuff, otherwise he might just forget you droped him.

3.He might have been protecting himself because he probably wasnt used to your friend yet.

4.Hold him atleast once a day or when you have time, and let him walk around on the ground whilst your stroking him but keep your eye on him incase he run's off.

  3. Why did you throw him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was really not nice at all. You could have really hurt him, but now that you have thrown him, he might not trust you and bite you more and more. As for the person who said give him treats, is really stupid because you dont reward a hamster for biting because then, after a while, he thinks that everytime he bites you, he will get a treat. Next time, dont throw your poor little hammie and actually be nice to him. Pull him off your finger and then PLACE him in the cage....not throw him!!

  4. 1: he'll be okay my friend dropped my hamster once because my hammie peed on her lol long story about that<

2: probably he will but not so offten,

3: probably it could mess with his harmones but it always depends and the hamster because corn could have made him SUPER hyper and didn't think staright.

4: actually sinse he's not human you can't really but you can try teaching him like teaching a dog how to do a trick.

  5. As long as he doesn't show signs of being hurt he'll be fine. If you were just eating or had the smell of food on your hands the hamster will bite you. Hamsters don't see very well at all and rely on a good sense of smell. So he would have smelt the food and not you. There isn't anyway to tell if he'll bite again. My hamster had bit me one time while I was putting his water on the cage and not one time after that did he bite me again. Just make sure after eating you wash ur hands good so no smell of food is left behind. Try playing with him again in a couple days give him a treat then try playing. So good luck to you : )

  6. ok here are the answers:

#1. he will be okay because you just dropped him

#2. well chances are he will bite you again because he probably doesn't trust you anymore

#3. no that is definitely not the reason. he probably bit you because he got really scared

#4. you can make him stop biting by giving more treats and when you hold him if he cleans himself, that means he has gained ur trust again

    hope i helped

  7. Uh... First try not throwing him in his cage.

  8. your hamster will be ok. it is impossible to know what a hamster will do. try to take the corn out and then let him eat and try to hold him.he may just be biting because his teeth are too long. hope this helps.and get some popcicle sticks and the hamster might bite on them an stop biting

  9. If he was ok after you removed him from your hand he should be ok.

You might have to earn his trust again.  For some reason he thought he needed to bite you.  I doubt it had anything to do with the corn, but may have been the pet sitter (sorry, I know they are your friend).

In order to earn his trust, I'd suggest what I had my one daughter do with one of her hamsters.  Get a pair of garden gloves that fit you.  Handle him gently while wearing the gloves.  If he bites you, the gloves will protect you so you don't' have the knee jerk reaction that you have when bitten.

Get some hamster treats, they sell a yogurt bite snack that they seem to really like. Don't give too many at one time though, I think they say one or two.
