Is my hand broken or bruised after punching a bed frame?

k so I went to joke around and wrestle my little bro. I went for a punch and I missed and hit the wooden bed frame. All of a sudden it started hurting. Then the palm muscle near my pinky swelled up (when I in fact don't remember even hitting the muscle). It hurts to move my pinky but it can move. The pinky isn't swolen. It's been about 1 hour since it happened. Is it borken or bruised

  1. I think the rule is if you can move it, it's not broken. More than likely it's just bruised. Ice it for a while to get the swelling down.

If you can move it - that usually means it's not broken, but it does sound like you've bruised it or maybe even put a crack in your bone.  Put some ice on it - 20 mins on, 20 mins off - if it's swollen, and depending on your pain level....see the doc if it's not feeling a little better by tomorrow or the day after


  3. It is hard to say from that description. If you can move all the parts of your hand, and you don't feel a "grinding" sensation, it is most probably just badly bruised. I had a similar injury from hitting on a punching bag with bare hands. I missed the bag and punched the cement wall next to it full force. It hurt for days.

    Ice it immediately. 15 minutes of ice followed by 15 of no ice, then another 15 on. The ice will hurt like a mother, but eventually your hand will go numb. That should take down the swelling. Also, if you don't have an allergy or reaction to it, take ibuprofen. This is an antiinflammatory as well as a pain reliever. Take it on a regular basis for a few days.

    If your hand hasn't gotten significantly better in a few days, see a doctor for x-rays.  

  4. try what the others advised and next time don't throw punches at your brother, especially during wrestling.  I know someone who puched a brick wall and their hand swelled to a boxing glove size almost , it was creepy and he had to go to the ER

    so, sense your hand is swollen and it gets even worse tomorrow, go get an x-ray bcuz u may or  may not have broken anything but u could have disloged something small. Its best to fiind out for sure  plus they could give u  anti-inflamatory pills and a cast or bandage wrap if need be.

  5. Use ice off and on first.

    Feel all along the bone, to feel if there is a super tender spot or a spot that is unusually bumpy.  Press on each joint.  

    If that is normal, and you can move it okay, prolly not broke, possible crack or torn muscle or ligament.  Any bruising?  Bruising is a sign of tissue damage.

    Make sure you can feel with your pinky  (not numb) and the fingernail looks pink (not pale, looks like the other nails)  If that is okay, just loosely wrap an ace bandage around your pinky and fourth fingers, then anchor it around your wrist.  If it doesn't get better in a couple days, go to the dr.

  6. If you make a face at the pain, you should see a doctor. I'm guessing that when you hit the bed frame you smashed your fingers, sending them backwards witch crushed your knuckles or something like that.
