Is my handgun legal in Ireland?

I have a .40 caliber semi automatic pistol and I am planning to move to Ireland in the next couple of years. I was wondering if my gun is legal at all, and if so, what licensing requirements I would face.

  1. No its not legal.

A better question is what are you planning on doing with it?

Why on earth do you need a handgun?

If you wanted to use it at a shooting range for example, then guns are provided at the range, there is no good reason at all to take the gun away from the range ubless you had plans to use it, who would be planning on shooting?

The only gun you can have is a shot gun with a barrel at least 24 in long and only then if you can give a very good reason why you need it.

    Good reasons are not

    - self defense

    - personal safety

    - any kind of shooting hobby (guns are provided by clubs and then given back)

    Good reasons are

    - farmer who has a vermin problem on your land

In Ireland if you're not a farmer then you have no good reason to own a gun and no one wants you to have one.
