My GF and I got another cat at just under 5 weeks old. He was great the first couple of days. Really smart too. Now at over 8 weeks, he's just a jerk. He just won't stop biting and clawing, loves to climb which is ok except when its bare skin. you can only pet him when he's falling asleep. keeps trying to "play" with our 4 year old cat, who's hated him since day one. We've tried everything to calm him down and nothing seems to work. any help?

  1. hey.never declaw  ur  cat.it'll pain for her.b 4 wen my cat was small she was also da same like ur cat.she'll b ok wen shell b a lil more big.

  2. Well , the thing is kittens need to be with their mom until they are around 8 weeks old . get him declawed, and cats fight like that if the older cat dont like it he'll show the little one whos boss after awhile. you could try giving him cat treats when he's good .

  3. Well for starters,,,,for Gods sake ITS A BABY!!!! You have to teach babies right from wrong, mine is 13 weeks and has just learned that hands and feet are not toys.....give it some time, they have to learn everything..

  4. stop being a fool , he is a kitten he is not being an **** hole , when he bites or scratches tell him NO or say OW ( that worked with my kitten)

  5. Hey guy,

No problem hon, I have cats all my life, right now 5 of them.  Try giving him one of those toys, it's a round plastic piece with a ball inside that rolls around, it's about 5" wide, so they play with that for awhile...also, try giving chewing toys, he might be teething at 8 weeks, that's the time...I promise it gets better dude...

Just love him up with patience, and he'll be fine...enjoy your new kitten, they get big fast...

Have a good week w/your girl...

    Peace,

  6. NO

  7. He is a kitten, kitten LOVE to play, get him a scratching post, scold him when he does/scratches things you don't want him to, and kittens are NOT ********.

  8. most likely, no...

Probably born with that personality.    i have had so many cats in and out of my life. currently i have 2 super friendly lovable kittens that purr and play nicely... i have also had the psycho attacker like u  who just wants to keep his distance . 4 years later, still the same way.

maybe before you get attached to him you could bring him to a shelter and chose a new cat.

  9. LOLOL! I wish I knew the answer. I seem to have the knack for getting those kind of cats too! Now I just have my dog. He's a Boxer and he's great!

Get rid of your demented kitten, you'll only hate it more as time goes on. Some cats are just "bad", and can't be changed. Must be the luck of the draw!

  10. hes a kitten for christ sake!!! all kittens are like that. he will grow out of it as he gets older. he just wants to play, hes not being an a$$hole

  11. Get him fixed and that should calm him down.

  12. Now, he wont. :D I also have a 8 weeks old kitten and he's a jerk too. :D I don't think he'll stop. Maybe he will, when he'll be about 2 years old, but until that... No. He's not going to change. :D

  13. Eventually, most likely.

Kittens this age are crazy.  They are little devils in fur suits.  It also doesn't help that he's too young to be away from Mom - Kittens learn self control and nice cat manners from thier brother and sisters, when a kitten bites another kitten too hard, the other kitten stops playing.

So, what should you do.  First off, teach him good manners.  When he is chewing on your arm, put him on the ground.  Every single time.  If he won't stop, put him in another room for a few minutes - think Kitty Time Out.  When he is playing nice, make sure you give him lots of praise and treats.  When he is naughty - time out.

Now, when you play with him, play with him hard.  Get about 40 - 50 balls (wadded up newspaper) and sit at one end of the room/hallway, and do nothing but throw the balls, so the kitten is continually moving.  Or use a string on stick or cat dancer (bit of cardboard on wire).  Keep playing with this kitten until the kitten is not moving and is givining you looks that say "are you kidding?"  This will make him more likely to sleep all night.  Also, I would start training your kitten.  RIght now, they are little sponges that soak up information.  I use clicker training with my cats, and one of the members in my group has reported phenomenal results in a situation much like yours with training.

But, remember, it will probably get a bit worst, before it gets better.  I think kittens get really hyper around 10wks old, and they are better coordinated.

  14. Well coming from a beginner crazy cat lady, kittens will be kittens they have no idea that they are being jerks they just wanna play, I have had 2 of my cats since they were little I bottle fed them they are now 1 year old and then my 5 month old cat we have had him since he was born also, and man was he a ****!! He still is at times but he has calmed down alot, he still likes to chase the other 2 cats and make them mad but he is still a little one so I have just gotten use to the fact that he is going to be a butt head til he gets older, and now he lets us pet him, he would bite at us if we tried when he was younger.

    Good Luck!

  15. The kitten is not the one acting like an A hole.

  16. Just under 5 weeks old is too young for the kitten to have left it's mother (for health AND emotional reasons) but you already have it so now you have to take over as the Mom. Normally the mother cat would teach the kitten what behavior is acceptable when it comes to rough play. Everything you describe is normal kitten behavior. At that age they have HUGE amounts of energy and are curious about everything. The kitten is trying to play with your older cat because it's the only other cat in the house. When your kitten bites and claws too hard put him on the floor with a firm NO! and give him a toy to play with instead. Interactive play with the kitten is very important at this age. Try dangling type toys for him to wrestle with that way he doesn't come in contact with bare skin. If the kitten tries to climb YOU then again pull him off with a firm NO and place him on the floor. You have to be consistent and do this every time so he learns what NO means. It's like dealing with a toddler, which is roughly the same age the kitten would be if it were human.  Eventually the kitten's high energy level will lessen and he won't be as much of an a*****e. When he's 8 weeks old he needs to see the vet for first shots, worming and exam. At about 4 months the kitten should be taken for spay/neuter.

  17. Get em a scratching post and some toys to tire him out.
