  1. That's the same thing that happened to my koi fish. I put them together with goldfish and they get along very well. and not even a week later, 2 of them died. You should try changing the pond tempature and make sure to filter it. but if he's slowing down and is swimming in a vertical position, he might have a broken bone or possibly a swim bladder problem. In that case, some frozen peas with the skin removed should do.

Another theory: You koi probably dosent like the other foods in the pond you are feding the other fish. Or he's overeating. I hope this helped

  2. The new fish might have brought a disease into your pond, that is why it is imporant to quarentine fish that are not very hardy(Koi are so heard to keep healhy!)

  3. Your first problem is you bought the koi from walmart.  I have to admit, I have done the same on one or two occasions due to I liked the coloring of the fish.  I am a koi breeder and am very leary of the "stock" to which I buy.  I have purchased 4 koi over the years at walmart (I know not a large amount, again I have to be careful here) and not one of the fish lived longer than a week or two, and for no apparent reason.

Right now your koi could have slowed the eating due to the heat.  Unless your water temps are remaining below 76 degrees, some will stop eating all together.  Also, this time of year misquotes and late summer bugs fill the ponds.  Koi and goldfish will also eat these in addition to algae and do not require food from you.

Keep an eye on your fish.  Try enticing him with orange's or lettuce and see if he picks up.  If he is still not eating after a few days feel free to email or im me.

  4. quarantine for a week is not enough

The word "quarantine" derives from the Italian quaranta dei (forty days) quarantine for a week is not enough.

Your koi could be a carrier.  Your ultimate sollution is clean the whole tank quarantine every fish.  How long did you do water change before you did the 20 percent water change?  does your pond got any filter?  How old is your pond before the introduction of this new koi?

here is the real explaination why not all fish survive when you bought it in petshop.  Since most breeder to save cost in feeding and electricity they put kois in mudponds.  From mudpond to our water not all will survive in conditioning.  Some will do short cuts no conditioning they sell it diretly to shops.   I bought a lot of these types of system lost lots and survive many also in the quarantine stage.  If the kois from a backyard breeder it is in good condition rather than from a mud pond the body shape in backyard are also nicer compared to kois harvested in mud pond thats why there is a conditioning phase for these koi and feed them good.

If we say that you got problem due to high heat this problem occurs already a long time ago not after the introduction of the new koi.

this is the problem of petshops owners don't teach the customers how to quarantine unlike the hobbyist breeders even a 100 percent good condition a quarantine is still suggested.  To make it simple a dead fish means more sales to this petshops I seldom see a petshop selling good condition fish only if the fish already stay too long in the petshop nobody buys it yet.

To condition new arrival fish takes time and money that why they cut this phase and sold it directly to buyers.
