Is my landlord responsible for this?

I'm a young single girl renting out a room from another girl my age in a new townhome. She lives there too. Is she responsible for providing things like light bulbs that have burned out in my bathroom and bedroom? I feel that she should be, but when I told her I needed new bathroom light bulbs, she told me it was my responsibility to keep my bathroom and bedroom up.

  1. You need to buy your own light bulbs. That's not something the landlord is responsible for.

  2. Read your written contract for the full details - if she is responsible for those things, it will say so in your contract. It usually depends on the landlord.

  3. yaa just get da light bulb and if you move out take all the light bulbs with u, leave her with nothing

  4. OK I have lived in a boarding house situation where the landlord was responsible for everything, but it was an "all guy " house (and  some of the  guys who lived there weren't terribly "housebroken") so  part of our rent specificly went to pay for the upkeep of the common areas. There were times when stuff ran out,  and the smarter among us had bought our own supplies of necessaries, and it caused no small amount of bad feelings when we didn't freely supply our "stash" to everyone.

If you were renting your own place you would be responsible for replacing bulbs as they burn out. If you don't share a bath I would say the same would hold true here.

In your situation my best advice would be to kind of take turns buying some of the shared items . This way your landlord/roomate knows that you appreciate  what it takes to keep a household functioning.{(and if this doesn't work out keep a stash any way)

  5. You should pay for all of your own personal space maintainence needs.

The maintainance needs in the communal area, the things you share, lights in the kitchen, dish soap, etc should be split 50/50.

  6. not everything that the landlord has to respond. unless you and the landlord had black and white listed in your tenancy.

  7. My experience is that light bulbs are going to be your responsibility. Usually, if it costs less that 10 bucks, don't bother calling the landlord. The less you have to see them, the better!

  8. I flat shared with three other girls and the guy we were renting from paid for light bulbs ,, but we had to pay for loo papper, bin liners   stuff like that ............ our flat was £ 800 pcm so with 4 of us it worked out brill

    hope this helps

  9. If you had a written or verbal agreement that she would provide such an item then yes it is her responsibility. All agreements are suppose to be made prior to paying the first deposit or payment. However, if this was never brought up by you or her when the agreement was made then it is your responsibility.

  10. Well, I'm no expert, but I think that depends on your contract and what you agreed for when you moved in.

If the money you pay for rent covers those things, then it is her responsibility to buy them. But in most cases, it is the renter's duty to keep up with everything except major things -like pipes or so.

  11. you should go to the dollar store and buy some there cheap.

  12. I've never had a landlord supply me with light bulbs or dish soap or trash bags.  As a matter of fact, the only thing I've ever had the landlord supply me with was the battery for the smoke alarm.  Every thing you've mentioned is the responsibility of the tenant.

  13. No, I am

  14. yes its ur responsibilty, not hers,u are the one using them, and they burnt while u were renting the apartement. When u rent an apartement u are responsible for everything,u should give back the apartement as you recieved it,if the bulbs were ok when u rented it means its ur problem not hers.
