Question:

Is my landlord responsible to fix/replace the broken garbage disposal?

I moved into our house this past January. The garbage disposal leaked since we moved in. My landlord asked the previous tenent who installed the disposal (happens also to be is son-in-law) to come over and fix it. He fixed the leak, and that was about 3 months ago. Now it leaks again and will not even turn on. I cleaned out the drain, the blades, ect. it will still now work. My landlord is pretty good about stuff, but I'm kinda nervous to bring it up to him that it needs to be fixed by a professional or we need a new one installed, seeing as I'm not sure a garbage disposal is one of the things he should have to fix.

  1. When mine conked out, the landlord was responsible for it.  I'm pretty sure he's the one to take care of, unless maybe you would have had it installed on your own.

  2. if your renting the place then landlord should repair everything unless it's in the contract that states a contractor is hired then a rebate is provided to repay back any repairs.

  3. If it's leaking the landlord should repair it. If it's not working because of something you put down it he could make you pay for it. I had a garbage disposal in my rental. The tenant kept jamming it up by forcing food down it to fast and not running enough water. I finally took it out and bought them a garbage can.
