  1. This might be alittle more complicated.

Black images can be the result of shooting in manual or shutter priority. You choose the shutter speed you want, and there isn't enough light for that shutter=black frame or dark pic.

Shooting in Apeture priority is fine, but start from zero. put that baby into full auto, if it's day time, select ISO 400 just for the heck of it. Take the same shots. If they look decent, then you might have forced the shutter too high, matched with an ISO that was too low.

I've done this on mistake in this exact fashion. Other possibility, somehow you've forced the exposure compenstation to a negative value. This can happen in A priority or manual mode, check. This is unlikely in full auto. If the pics look ok, but still blury, you need a faster shutter, a higher ISO will be needed, re-shoot at 800 or more, but expent more noise or grain in the pics.

Add info after you try your next shoot.

  2. Black has to do with under exposing the image.

Set your camera on aperture priority, open the lens all the way and start shooting .. if you are shooting under lights, you will have to use higher ISO film

I am surprised you are getting black images ... is your light meter working?

  3. Kit lenses are always slow.  You're pictures are coming out black because you're not exposing it long enough or opening your aperture wide enough.  If it was exposed properly it would still be visible and bright, but you would be forced to use slower shutter speeds which will blur your fast moving skaters.  You want a lens with an aperture thats wider and make sure you have enough light to get faster shutter speeds like 1/100 or faster.
