Question:

Is my mechanic right?

I have a 1992 3/4 ton K2500 chevy pick up and have been having problems lately. If i leave it not running for a couple hours or overnight it is EXTREMELY hard to start in the morning. It will keep stalling untill i work the key and gas pedal for about fifteen minutes. Once it is running it is fine. I just changed the fuel filter, spark plug wires, distributer cap and rotor. I also tried running dry gas and fuel injection cleaner threw it. None of which worked. So i took it to the shop and the mechanic said that my distributer is compleatly shot. Will this cause my trucks symtoms? or is that just one problem? I just want to make sure im not getting screwed over by my mechanic! any help would be nice.

  1. I don't understand your dist. being completely shot. If that were so the engine would not run smooth after warming up. I think your"mekanik" doesn't know what's wrong. Go get another opinion or after the new dist. there will be another problem and then another. It sounds to me as though you have a fuel problem, possibly injector related. Auto supply injector cleaner is not much help.

  2. You know what?  Your mechanic has seen your car, and laid hands on it and checked things out.  I haven't even seen it.  Are you going to take my word over his?

If you want me to look at it, drop it off or bring it in and I'll give you my opinion.  If you drop it after hours leave the key in the key drop.  Then once I look at it and tell you you can ask again because you obviously don't trust mechanics.

Since you don't, fix it yourself.

  3. people like you p**s me off at work, they come in and never trust you.  Its a mechanic shop and i'm a mechanic for a reason!

If you "trust" your mechanic, then why did you type

"I just want to make sure im not getting screwed over by my mechanic"

  4. if it starts and you cant keep it running without revving the engine until it warms up it probably is the Idle Air Control Valve if you have someone tap on it with the handle of a screwdriver while you try to start it and it starts to run fine without the long warm up process replace it only about $25 autozone

  5. If you had even bothered to mention which of 4 different gas engines you have that were available on that truck, or much of any other useful information, I might have considered helping, but then again, you probably wouldn't believe me anyway, so what's the point.

Just admit it, the only reason you don't fix it yourself, is that all you know how to do is take parts off and put them back on. And even then probably only the easy stuff. If you knew how to diagnose, you wouldn't have replaced all that other stuff that didn't help, and you wouldn't be so ticked off about it all.

So my suggestion is to find a mechanic you can trust, and pay him what he's worth, or someday you'll all be on your own!

  6. I'de believe him, I had the same symptoms with a chevy V-8 blazer. Finally I obtained a used but good distributor and installed it, Shazam !!

Upon inspection of the old one I found badly worn bushing letting the shaft "wobble" thus loosing contact with the breaker assy.
