I am in 7th grade and just started track this year. My mile time is 6:47, is that good or bad? What can I do to improve it?

If you need to know I am 5'2 and weigh 107 pounds.

  1. Wow! that is great i am in 7th grade too and my mile time is between 9-10 minutes. Practice sprinting for as long as you can then jog. Keep repeating that. GOOD lUCK

  2. that's a good time for 7th grade. to improve it try running for endurance when you train, and when you run on the track try to get the same time the first three laps, then a little faster on the last lap when you give that extra burst at the last 100. you should be able to do each lap in about 1 min 40 sec

  3. That's pretty good for a 7th grade time... But just know that by high school times get much faster (for example, my best mile is 5:24, and im only the 2nd best miler on my team).

Don't overtrain during middle school, though. Just do all the workouts that your coach gives you, then maybe add on a mile or so. Ask your coach for more help on this, he or she knows you and yoru running style better than anyone on YA.

  4. Since you have just begun training, you will find that to improve all you have to do is run a few more miles every week.

It is impossible to determine your potential without more training.  If you get your aerobic fitness up, by running more miles you will improve dramatically.

Every 2 weeks if you are feeling alright, you should increase your weekly mileage.  If you have more time to train, I would suggest talking to your coach or getting a training book by Arthur Lydiard.  To train correctly, it takes more time and consists of a few phases, but at your level, just running a bit more will make a huge difference.

Do not change your breathing or stride length.  Your body will naturally develop into a more efficient runner through training.  Increasing your stride actually slows you down, you should focus more on cadence most elite runners have a 165-185 strides per minute.  If you over extend your stride your foot is in front of your body and you brake.  The goal is for your foot strike to be directly beneath your body as this is most efficient. Once again this will all come naturally through training.

  5. Yeah, that is a pretty good time for a 7th grader. My time was like a 6:15 when I was in 7th grade and I just kept improving. You are very capable of being an amazing runner. You just have to be mentally ready to practice hard and run hard in your races. You can't let the pain get to your head. You have to overcome the pain. Also, you can't slack off in practice. You have to give it all you have got even if the others aren't. Good Luck! I hope you achieve your goal in your mile time!

  6. HI, I have ran track since I was a little kid and I started out doing the mile and 800meter run now I'm a sprinter.

The mile is a hard race to do, but you can do it if you learn how to control your breathing, stride, and kick it into gear at the end. Your time of 6:47 is not bad at all especially for it being your first year doing track. One of the main points to make it easier is self confidence and determination. If you think and say your gonna lose and do bad then you are most likely gonna do that. When running longer distance you should have a longer stride than if you're sprinting. A stride is length in between your steps. When you breathe you should breathe in your nose and out your mouth. You can practice this before you get out onto the track. The kick at the end is when you start pumping your arms really fast and hard so that you run faster because when you're tired you need to use you're arms a lot more. It's OK if you don't get it the first time just remember try and try again. There's that determination.

I hope this was of some use to you.

I am only in 8th grade so I have got a lot to learn to. My pleasure to help. Bye, Natalie
