Question:

Is my oral surgeon lying to me?

I had my wisdom teeth out a little over a week ago and everything seemed to be going fine. All my teeth were slowly starting to feel better and then about three days after the operation one of them started hurting more. It got to the point that I had to take vicodin just to deal with it when I hadn't used it at all during the first few days. My eye hurts and my temple hurts. I went to the doctor today and she said that it looks like I have a cavity in the last tooth and that's probably why I'm in pain. But the thing is, I went to the dentist about two weeks before I had my wisdom teeth removed and he x-rayed me and even filled a cavity (which is the only one he said I had) I've been going to this dentist for years and he's never done anything wrong. I don't see why he would not tell me about a cavity since he can only make money off of it anyway.

I looked up my symptoms and to me it sounds like dry socket. Is the oral surgeon just trying to cover her butt by lying?

  1. I'm a dentist and I'm sure its dry socket... the clot must have disintegrated and that is the reason why this is happening.. It usually occurs after a difficult wisdom tooth operation. Plus cavity pain will never radiate till your eyes. Go to the dentist and confront her. You can tell her that you know about dry socket. I hope she helps you out. Tc

  2. It probably is dry socket, if you're sure that you have no cavities.

If you do have dry socket, the oral surgeon is not trying to "cover her butt" by lying because it's not her fault if a dry socket occurs, sometimes it just happens.

You should just try to ask her during your next appointment, it doesn't hurt to check.  Your oral surgeon should be open to your suggestions (it is a little suspicious that she won't even take the time to examine the possible cavity or the socket).

  3. The worst thing you can do to yourself, dear, is to self-diagnose.  Go back to your dentist and complain.

  4. I'd get a second opinion. Sounds suspicious to me. Go to your dentist and talk to him. Then get back to your oral surgeon and tell her what your dentist said. That's what I would do. :)

  5. I sympathize. I've had nothing but trouble with dentists and have trusted only a few. Those retired. But you're between a rock & a hard place. You have to get teeth taken care of. Just have to be lucky enough to find a good one you can trust.

  6. sound like dry socket to me,they have dry socket paste they can put in there to relieve the pain,i would see a general dentist, don't go back to the o.s.
