hi everyone

ive had my parakeet for around a year now from the pet store where i work, not hand raised as far as i know, he is a full albino, no pigment at all and pink eyes though its hard to tell cus he is albino but i think he is male, from when i got him i hand tamed him pretty quickly, and he will step on to my hand everytime i go to his cage. he lets me pet him however i wish, and even groom his head feathers, he likes that. I pay attention to him everyday for at least a few hours before and after work and generally try to spoil him rotten.

However he doesnt play or seem interested by anything, for the most part unless i disturb him he will sit in his cage in the same few spots 24 hours a day moving only to eat or drink. i rotate him all kinds of toys everyweek and he doesnt care, he rarely sings. even when i take him out he will just sit on my finger or shoulder uninterested in what i show him. and he also looks for the first oportunity to go back to his cage.

is he ok?

  1. Parakeets are very social and really like to live with other parakeets.  You might consider getting another bird to keep him company.  If you don't want to do that, then try hanging a mirror in the cage and see if he gets interested in it.

I had an albino parakeet before and it was very healthy...had it in a cage with a green one and it would chase the green all over the place and make little noises like it was lecturing the green...so I don't think the albino coloring would be the reason the bird isn't very active.

  2. Hes ok. Remember in the wild a Budgie is a flock bird. Since he doesnt have a companion he sees you as part of his flock. You got two options. Option 1: is to continue with the bond which im sure will last many years. And Option Two: is geting him a companion. The second option is not needed but if you want to then go ahead.

  3. albinos are prone to a shorter life span and more health problems. you need to get the bird into an avian vet to rule out any potential health problems, improve the nutrition and help with your problem.

    best wishes ~♥~
