Question:

Is my pet's RX correct?

my vet is closed and I am supposed to give my puppy chlorphen suspension tonight. I just noticed that the RX says to give her 1CC while is equal to 1 milliliter, which is a lot I think for a 10 week old puppy who weighs 2.5lbs. Since I can't call the vet until tomorrow I am not going to give it to her, but does anyone know if this dose would be even close to correct???

  1. I think it's right.

An adult/ child takes 5 or 10 mgs. per kg. of weight depending on the severity of the allergy.

This is 5 or 10 ml. per 2.2  pounds of weight.

So, 1 milliliter for 2.5 pounds is safe.

If your not sure though, it won't hurt with this medication to wait until to-morrow,

  2. Dont dose him/her.

Wait till 2morrow & ring the vet.

  3. If you are unsure.. you can try calling an ER vet to see if it sounds correct.

A suspension is the drug mixed with kind of liquid or syrup.  There is not a full CC of the drug itself within the suspension.

  4. the form of the drug you have is some small amount suspended (hence suspension) in a liquid that is not the medication

it's to make dosing easier, milligram-accurate scales are expensive and medical grade ones even more so, but putting 1g of medicine in 1l of water (for instance) leaves you with 1000 1mg doses

  5. it depends on how many mgs. of the drug ( chlorpheniramine maleate,an antihistamine) are in 1 cc of the suspension.Does it say on the bottle? The usual dosage for dogs is 2 - 8 mgs.per pound of body weight every 8 -12 hours. I think you would probably be safe giving it to her.The vet wouldn't give the dog something that would hurt her,and it;s a very safe drug, although it may make her sleepy and thirsty ,as it makes the mouth dry.

  6. That's pretty close to the right dose for that size animal.  Watch her for excessive sleepiness or loss of appetite.  The better question is, what does she have that is being treated with an antihistamine?
