Question:

Is my pet mouse pregnant or just sick?

I have two mice, which I thought were both girls. But I went away for a few days and when I got back one of my mice, the smaller one, was looking fat in the middle area and kind of "pear shaped". I also noticed her building a nest and her nipples are quite visible now. Although, I looked at both of my mice's genitalia and both looked the same. Is it possible that my mouse is pregnant and the other one is actually a boy? Or could she have a disease? Please help I am extremely confused. Thanks so much.

  1. How long have you had your mice?

    Where are they from?

Pet store mice are often kept all together so it is possible to take a girl home when she is already pregnant. Mice pregnancies last for 21 days, so if you've had your mice for less than that, one could be pregnant from the store, if you've had them for more than that, chances are that one of your mice is a boy. In this case, I would separate the two mice immediately so that whenever your girl gives birth, he doesn't get her pregnant again (females can get pregnant again within less than 24 hours of giving birth).

  2. its very possible she is pregnant, if she was building a nest and is gaining weight then most likely she is. I wouldn't worry too much about her having a disease unless she isn't eating properly or has a runny nose. Also, it is hard to tell the difference in the male/female genitalia in mice because they look quite similar, i hope this helps.

  3. here is a web site that shows you opictures of a male and female mouse.hope this helps !God Bless,Heather
