Is my rat marking his territory?

whenever i have emile out he wil run about on my bed and if he runs over my hand he will sometimes pee on them. he only seems to pee on my hands and not on my bed

he is marking his territory wen pikin it up stokr it first in the cage to get the scent on ur hands then he may not orwash ur hands with water before handling they may help

Okay so make sure to wash your hands right after that happens okay?  Get the odor off your hands and maybe that won't happen.  If it does keep on happening, wear some gloves.

if its a boy then yes, he will mark his territory, so make sure you wash your hands afterwards. girls wont normally do this so if its a girl go to the vets i would say.

My male hammy does that. It is kinda like saying to the other hammy this is my territory. Usually after you wash your hands and handle him again he will repeat this because he doesn't smell his own mark.

Rats have no bladder control. He will pee everywhere he goes (yes even on your bed).

If you have a problem with wild rats it is possible to see where they have been by wearing special glasses and using UV light to follow the pee trail.

Rats mark everything, especially where they feel safe. They mark safe places to travel, safe places to sleep, safe foods to eat. Dominant rats mark submissive ones AND submissive rats mark dominant ones. Its more of a way of figuring out who's in your rattie community and less of a way of marking territory. Your rat obviously feels like he's part of your pack and he's safe with you.

That means he loves you and thinks of you as part of his family. It's their little way of marking their "territory".

I always keep a few baby wipes handy for when my boys get a little to pee happy.
