Does finding silk/webbing at the bottom of the cage mean it's male or female?

  1. female webbing means laying eggs

  2. They both put webbing mats on the ground.  The only way to tell is that the male has very long Pedipalps.  These are what most people think are an extra pair of legs protruding from the very front of the spider's head.  He uses these for mating.

Also, as a general rule, the males tend to be smaller than the females and they have a smaller abdomen.

Side Note:  If you ever see your spider laying on its back, do NOT assume it's dead and molest it.  Leave it completely alone.  It is molting, and will pull itself out of its old skin in a few hours.  You can save the molted skin if you want.

  3. Along with male tarantulas (as with most male arthropods) being smaller than the female, you can also tell if your spider is a male by looking at the tarsus of the front legs.  On males, they have hooks used to hold the female's fangs back during copulation.

  4. who knows??
