Is my son eating too much?

My son is 14 months old and it seems to me like he's eating all day. we've fallen into the trap of giving him a snack if he doesn't want to sit in his car seat or in the buggy sometimes. this might happen once a day and i know it isn't good so going to stop today.

he eats loads but at the same time he runs around ALL day and is a content toddler. we go out atleast twice a day and he gets to run around the park or just walk next to me whereever we're going.

so this is what he eats on a normal day:

6.30 breastfeed (my milk is like cream at this stage and he'll feed for about half an hour)

7 am brekky. porridge with fruit, piece of toast with pate. (this is the same amount that i eat)

10 am fruit and maybe a natural yogurt with banana in it

12 lunch. 1-2 slices of whole meal bread with cheese or meat, some fruit, milk.

3 pm slice of toast and fruit or yoghurt

5 pm dinner. he eats a small bowl of whatever we're having. i try to cook healthy foods and only use whole meal products and brown rice.

7 pm breastfeed

in between these meals he'll usually have some cheerios to snack on or some rich tea biscuits.

sorry about the length of this question. i appreciate if you're still reading.

so in your opinion is he eating too much? he was never a small baby and he's always been a hungry one. he's also stocky and very strong. i have pictures if that will help?

thanks. very confused here...

  1. Looks like he is eating too much yes. I suggest you talk with your GP or health worker to arrange a sensible eating plan for him.

  2. well........ yes!! i know as a parent, it is hard! and you have to think really, am i doing the right thing..?

and unfortunately not.. because as you almost over 70% aussies are over weight, and kids now days really get teased about it and can't play as much sport with their friends! so you should stop feeding him TOO MUCH! just a little bit a day!

    tough cookies!

  3. Since its all healthy he should be ok, as long as he is in the 99th centile for height and weight. My son is now 17 months and although I've recently switched from breastfeeding to cow milk he eats a lot too and drinks lots of water as well.

Although we don't always give him snacks, but if we do its cheese, toast or fruit, he eats always has two slices of bread for his sandwich or whatever he's having for lunch and has done for a long time, and at dinner his portion would prob be half of mine, at least. He's in the 75th centile for weight and height so is perfect, he's tall and slim. He's always had a great appetite and is full of energy. I asked the health visitor when he was smaller about the amount he was eating and feeding because until a year as well as his three meals he was having at least five breastfeeds a day and I was worried about giving him too much, she said as long as the food's healthy and his height and weight are in proportion to let him eat as much as he wanted because he obviously needs it.

Its not like you're giving him a load of rubbish to eat, that would be a different matter, it seems like my little boy he's energetic so uses it all up.

  4. he eats more than me!

  5. Are you an American?????????

  6. that's loads! i bet he doesn't need that much!

  7. i think a little over average

  8. Sounds ok to me!

If he is in proportion - i.e right weight for his height then dunna fret.

All three of my kids have been hungry kids! I've always given them 'healthy' stuff instead of loading them with c**p and they are all just fine. My 18 month old eats nearly exactly the same diet - he is also stocky and strong, but perfectly fine. I'm not sure about the amount of wholemeal stuff though, i seem to think that a lot is not recommended for little kids..

Seems to me that some kids pick like birds while others defintely need more substance!

He's running around all day and burning off a lot of energy, though yeah I'd try to lose the extra snacks - he is already having substantial snacks at 10 and 3 and i'd lose the extra toast at breakfast -my 18 month old always wants more at breakfast but i know a bowl of porridge is more than adequate so I just distract him for 10 mins and he seems to forget!. Also bear in mind how much he doesn't finish or ends up on the floor.. he may not actually be eating as much as you think. And if he's pestering for food, try to always offer a drink first - kids are not very good at distinguishing between hungry and thirsty.

Talk to your health visitor, check he is ok for weight/height - and don't worry if he is off the chart - my friend's little girl was always way above the chart but in proportion - she is 7 now and absolutely perfect - not skinny not fat, juuuusst right! And my 5 year old has periods of weeks where he talks of nothing but food - when's dinner?, can i have snack?, what we having for tea? - it sends me crazy and makes me worry, but i know he does this from time to time - next thing i know his trousers are floating round his ankles and he looks like he needs a good meal!

    All kids are different.

  9. I don't think it's too much, but at his next appt. ask the doc what percentile he's in... If he's above 90 in wiehgt I would cut down on portions. Maybe only one of anything you might give him multiples of.

    Good luck

  10. 3 small main meals and 2 snacks in between is just right, dont worry about his weight as long as he is eating healthily
