  1. Mine were saying a lot more at that age. I wrote their words down by month, and they were saying a page full at least.

Here's a link to my website, which has two different developmental checklists on it....

I would complete them and give them to your pediatrician.

  2. Perfect! Thats exactly how my daughter was! From this point on he will be picking up soooo many words it will blow u away.. lol I love when my daughter says "tickle" its so cute!

  3. Aww.... cute!

  4. Yes your son is fine we worried about the same thing but his words picked up at about 2 years old also be patient and just keep talking to him that helped us a lot.

  5. I would be more concerned when you child is over the age of 2. Every child, however, developes differently. Just keep on encouraging. Alot of encouragement is good when it comes to a child's developement.

  6. Yes...just slowly teach him more.

  7. My 2 year old did the same thing, until about a month ago, he would say certain things, but forget other things. Then he started talking. He just doesn't want to talk now, take in this time of some what quietness. My dr said I had to work with him. Don't worry! He will be talking your ear off soon enough!

  8. dont listen to some of these people who like to post brag sessions for thier kids.

your child is on target and moving along very well and here are some resources that i have to prove it.

  9. truthfully he should probably be saying closer to 24 words. You don't have to worry too much unless he is showing signs of being really frustrated. he would most likely benefit from some speech therapy for a few months to catch up. Check with your local early intervetion/birth to 3 agency. In my town they screened my son for free, then are paying for his therapy. He goes for 30 minutes 2 times a week---4 hours a month, and I have not paid a penny in more than 5 months. He even had over $200 worth of sign language DVDs purchased for him. It has allowed him to really become the little boy that he wanted to be, so smart and funny:)

  10. Tickle is a good early word.  :-)

Doctors tend to pay attention if kids aren't saying any words at all by 18 months.  Since he's talking a little (and even saying a phrase), I doubt your doctor would see it as a cause for concern.  Most kids are talking somewhat more at that age, but it seems reasonably in the range of normal, and some kids just start slowly and then blast ahead.  Generally by 2 they like to see kids saying 2-word phrases and saying substantially more words, but my guess is that your son will be taking off in his vocabularly soon.  Often kids learn a few words, take a little break, and then rapidly start learning lots and lots of words seemingly all at once.

One of my kids was talking in paragraphs by 18 months; another said not that many more words than your son.  Both of them were total chatterboxes by 2.

  11. wait till he's 18 YEARS and see if he's speaking enough for his age....:)

  12. i work with kids that age and they don't say that many around me so I would say your kid is average.  they are not gonna bust out with "apple" "watermelone" "basketball" anytime soon, but keep reading to him, showing him the basic words.  books like "my first words", "colors" "shapes".

I always talk to the kids, tell them what they are holding, and say in a non-babytalk way.  Also when they say the word I clap and say "good job".

If you are really worried, go see your dr. and ask about it.  but I wouldn't be worried.  all kids develope at different rates.

  13. I think parents are so paranoid with all the media attention to Autism, you have a child and if they are not speaking clear sentences by the time they are walking, people freak out.

The best thing to teach your child to talk plain and correct is to cut the baby talk, talk to your child like a small person, read books, point out various things repeat what they are, let him sound it out, taking time with your little ones is the best way to teach them. You will know if they are progressing correct or not. Also, have your babies doctor do a full check up.
