Question:

Is my tap water safe to drink?

I live in an apartment and though I'm almost completely certain that my tap water is clean, however I'm afraid it maybe contaminated from the pipes. Is there a way to test whether or not it is safe to drink?

In addition, I have a PUR purifier for the time being. Are those more cost efficient than water bottles? If so, is there a significant cost difference?

  1. Pur is not a purifier. It is a filter. That is as basic of a system as you can get. Filters only improve taste and odor only. They do not purify.

If you have a lead testing kit, like the ones they sold to test toys from China that can tell you. Otherwise there don't seem to be any good kits that a home owner/resident can get to test. You can ask your local water company or health departement if they can do it. Some sellers of water purifiers may provide this service too in hopes of getting a sale.

As long as the pipes are not lead then the basic cleaning tap water gets and your Pur should be fine. If they are lead then you need to get a real system. If you have any concerns without knowing what the pipes are maybe getting a real system would be better. The highest rated system on the market is an eSpring and despite its cost it actually is cheaper per gallon to use than Purs and Brittas.

I will provide more information and place to buy upon request.

  2. it should be good if you have a purifier!without it though i think there's something out there where you can check it for contamination.you just have to find it!to be safe just buy water bottles!

  3. yes if it has the purifier but no if just regular tap water it has backterrior and led in it please pick me as best answer

  4. Most city's tap water is safe enough to drink. It's pretty regulated already, and most if not all the sediment and minerals will come out in a good filter.

The cost comparisons will depend a lot on the details, like how much you drink, what kind of bottled water you get, etc.

If you get the upright cooler style bottle, they can be as much as six dollars per bottle for distilled water, plus refundable deposit for the bottle itself. Add to that the cost of the cooler and it can add up. Many grocery stores sell purified water in a variety of containers, some of which fit in your fridge. Or you can get cheaper bottled water for as little as two dollars a bottle.
