Apparently my teacher thinks that in cinderella, when the glass slipper falls off its a metaphor for beauty being pain.

I'm not sure thats how it goes, doesn't it just fall off?

  1. Astounding! I never even gave it a second thought, but she must be a good teacher because you brought it to these boards for a discussion point and all of us are now thinking about it!  I'd say you had a very good teacher!  I don't know if I agree with her, but anyone who gets people thinking in positive ways can't be stupid!

  2. First of all, think about what you just said.  "Doesn't it just fall off?"  A metaphor isn't specific...it's implied, so you just lost your own argument there.  Interpretation is just that.  Everyone is entitled to their own interpretation of a story.  Personally, I don't see a problem with her interpretation.  Instead of being so negative, try having an open mind and looking deeper into literary works.  You don't necessarily have to agree, but listen and keep an open mind.

  3. Your teacher isn't necessarily stupid......

We all have our own ways to interpretate different stories.  This is just her interpretation.  But that's the beauty, we all can come up with our own interpretation or none if we so choose.  Many believe these Disney Stories are plays on our real life, however ask a little 5 year old girl what she thinks.......She'll say the slipper just broke.  It's all in the eye of the beholder.

The problem with any education system is when we are forced to believe the principles and beliefs solely of our professor/teacher.  These aren't necessarily always correct!

So don't blame your teacher for being stupid.  It's simply her interpretation.  Perhaps it's best to agree to disagree.

  4. And now for a totally different take on it. I always thought the story of Cinderella was one of Christianity.

In short, the Father represents God, the evil step mother and the evil stepsisters represents the apostate church their methods of control. The Father went away and the Cinderella was left with the apostasy.

The Holy Spirit(Fairy Godmother) came along and made her whole and complete for a short time as long as she followed the rules set forth. She went to the ball as a complete and perfect person where she met and fell in love with the Prince(Christ). She left the ball to go home, but lost her slipper. It was lost because of her obedience to Fairy Godmother.

The slipper was then used as identifying mark of the true church. The Prince and his servants came looking for the person(church) who was perfect by the Fairy Godmother and naturally only Cinderella(the true church)  could fit the bill.

See how crazy of an interpretation that is? That's the beauty of literature, we can delve into and come up with our very own interpretation. Someone can read the story and come up with what I wrote or they can say, it was just a story about a girl who got her prince.

I don't think your teacher is stupid. In fact, I think your teacher is very intelligent. Why? She obviously said something that made you really think about. You are still thinking about and pondering on it. That to me says that she did her job and did it well.

  5. cool.

  6. I always thought that the Slipper falling off meant that nothing, even beauty and happiness, can last forever. That's why Cinderella had to be home before midnight, since we can't fake our way through life, our lies will eventually be discovered. So I guess its all in how you interpret it. No your teacher isn't stupid, she is smart for analyzing an old fairytale and finding a new meaning to what is written.
